It’s easier to keep to himself. Most clans do not have any particular love loss for Azgeda. Even an exiled one. Most human contact comes from trading posts and the occasional bounty hunting job he can pick up. It isn’t a glorious life. But it’s still a life. One of survival. The wood and plains are all he has. He trusts only himself. He tells himself the isolation is better. And pushes down the homesick feeling in his gut. The bitter taste in his mouth.
He realizes he isn’t alone today. Light steps stalking through the forest when his instincts tell him someone else is near. Roan moves quietly, slinking behind trees and using the shadows as his friend until he lays eyes on the man.
He can’t seem to place his clan. He holds no markings. His dress does not seem similar to Ouskejon wear, the tribe whose land he is passing through. He can’t just move on either and leave the man, as he doesn’t know yet if he is a threat. This is rather close to a cave he frequents. And perhaps he is a little curious. Roan steps out, ready to draw his sword if necessary. “ Chon yu bilaik? Hakom yu kamp raun hir? ”
Max’s entire body went rigid. The words were spoken in a deep, gravely voice. Their meaning, however, was lost on Max. There had been many different languages in the Wasteland. Although his interaction with others was limited, he had picked up a few words. But the man’s tongue was completely foreign to him. It wasn’t surprising, considering he was in a new land.
He let the remains of the rabbit drop to the ground. Steadying his grip on the knife he was using to fillet the beast, he quickly turned and lashed out. It didn’t matter to him what the man’s intentions were. Max didn’t trust anyone, especially not in a world he knew nothing about.

“I really appreciate this.” Darcy rubs her arm while she watches him tinker, unsure what else to say or do. He’s barely said a word to her since he arrived and started looking under the hood of her car. Part of her can’t even be sure he’s not making things worse or harboring ulterior motives, but when the sun’s starting to set and the frequency of cars passing by has started to lessen, she decides she’s better off hoping for the best. And if she’s wrong, at least the taser in her bag is pleasant company.
It starts to look like he’s almost done so she reaches into said bag, fishing out her wallet. She pulls out a twenty dollar bill. “This is all I have on me in cash.” She holds it toward him. “For your trouble? What happened to it, anyway?” Obviously it’s going to take more than duct tape to fix, but she prays she’s a few problems short of a mandatory visit to the mechanic.
Of course she’s awkward around him. He was a stranger and they were almost completely alone. And the sun was starting to go down. Max’s quiet nature wasn’t relieving the tension either. If he had been in her shoes, he would have told him to move on as he waited for someone he trusted.
The bill that was pretty much shoved in his face threw him off guard. He blinked at her for a moment before taking a step back, wanting some distance between them. He used a spare rag to wipe most of the grease off of his hands. Tucking the spray bottle into the crook of his elbow, he mumbled out, “’S fine.” Max took down the props and lowered her car hood. “HT leads,” he explained, his Australian accent a sharp contrast to her American one. “Go to a garage and ask ‘em to check over the ignition system.”

The taste of sand sat in his mouth. It dried his tongue and gritted between his teeth. As Max did an inventory of the supplies he had, he was starting to regret not joining Furiosa and the Wives at the Citadel. Survival would have been much easier, but it was not a place he could call home. Although it was harsh and unforgiving, the Wasteland was his home. It had tried to kill him plenty of times, and nearly succeed, but it still provided him life. Only in small amounts, however.
The sand in his mouth increased tenfold as his teeth snapped the bones of a live lizard. The creature had been dehydrated just like everything else, but its blood would be enough to keep him going for a bit longer. The sound of an engine in the distance brought him pause. He was reminded of when he had been chased down by War Boys. Since the Citadel had new rulers, he had to remind himself that this wouldn’t be a repeat. Hopefully.
Max was much too low on gas to have hope of escaping. Instead, he readied his guns with whatever bullets he had left.

Max wasn’t sure want compelled him to pull over. Normally, he avoided people when he could. He had no reason to stop to help the woman with car troubles. But there he was, up to his elbows in grease with the hood of her car above him. She was lucky that he had tools with him at all.

Max felt a sinking feeling in his stomach every time he thought about Furiosa and the Wives. He had found their Green Place beyond the Salt Flats. The journey had almost killed him, but apparently the people in this world were kinder than in his. They had given him water and food; they had taken care of him as much as they could without ever asking for anything in return. He would not have survived otherwise.
This new land was much easier to live off of, even without the technology he was used to. No car, no guns. The people here lived off the land, and he would too. He avoided them like the plague, however. Max didn’t want any company. He wasn’t interested in the politics of this world. He was here to survive and had no other interests.
In the middle of skinning a rabbit that would be his meal, he heard a sound from behind him. He snapped his head in the direction it came from, but saw nothing. His mind was still playing tricks on him, it seemed.
