Rick was back. He couldn’t believe his family had waited until nightfall before they’d told him. He was so cross with them he barged out of the house and headed straight for the Macy household. Amy helped calm him down on the way there. She’d gone with him and he would be lying if he said her presence wasn’t comforting.
He’d almost gone round the back of the house like he’d always done when he was younger. He used to throw stones at Rick’s window to get him to come down because if he so much as set foot on the doorstep, Bill would raise hell.
"I’m banned from goin’ in there. Rick’s dad hated me when he was alive," He said. More talking aloud to himself than to Amy, really.
"Well he’s dead, you’re un-dead. Ban’s void." She answered him anyway before tilting her head toward the house, "Now go do what you came here to do."
Kieren nodded. He squares his shoulders and walks up to the door, bringing an arm up to knock loudly against the wood.
Rick didn’t know about what had happened to Kieren, he didn’t know he’d ever died. Janet hadn’t told him, because he’d never asked. She didn’t know Kieren was back, so she probably thought it was better to keep that news for when he’d settled back in and had come to terms with himself, with the fact that his dad was no longer around, that his ‘kind’ had killed him.
His old bedroom felt uncomfortable, reminding him of why he’d gone into the army in the first place, but now the pressure of his father had gone and it didn’t look like his mother was implementing it. It was just them now. It had always been nicer when it was just them, when his dad was out, but he didn’t feel okay enough to think like that. His dad was his dad, nice or not, he still loved him.
The knock at the door startled him a little and his mother got up to answer it. She was nervous with Rick back home, afraid someone might change their mind with being okay with it, but with Bill gone, the HVF wasn’t going as strong as it used to be. When she opened the door, however, a frown spread over her face. “Kieren...? I thought--”
