Sunny War – New Day (live for The Current)

Los Angeles-based folk-punk musician Sunny War — born Sydney Lyndella Ward — is known for her virtuosic guitar playing accompanied by deeply honest lyrics reflecting 21st century concerns. From playing in smaller Americana scenes to being on multiple late-night shows in the past year, Ward’s journey in music has been nothing less than fruitful. Her latest album, "Anarchist Gospel," explores resiliency and deep reflection, as it’s wrapped up in a bow of lush harmonic music with strong roots in Americana and folk. Sunny War stopped by The Current studio to share some songs from her newest album — including this performance of "New Day."

 Hårgalåten is a well known folk song in Sweden, but it's not as well known outside of Sweden. It's a tale about how the devil himself, disguised as a fiddler, made the young people in the village of Hårga in Hälsingland dance to their death. Back in 2015, our drummer at the time, Stefan Wahlberg aka "Bödeln", said that he wanted us to record a version of Hårgalåten. He himself was from Hälsingland, and he really liked the song and the lyrics. A recording of this song never happened at the time, and as some of you know, Stefan tragically passed a away a few years later. About a year ago, we decided that we would record our own interpretation of Hårgalåten. It features our friend Georg Börner (ColdWorld (Official)) on the traditional Swedish instrument nyckelharpa, vocals by Miranda Samuelsson and has been mastered by Markus Stock (Empyrium, Sun Of The Sleepless) This one is for you Stefan.
