There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kld’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.

This webcomic is about what would happen if Peter Parker were bitten by a radioactive Brown Recluse Spider (I'll tell you one thing that would happen, hilarious Arachnid behavior would ensue).
Senator Bernie Sanders (I) VT (I enjoy that Vermont has an independent Senator) has introduced a bill that would make all drugs generic and replace the incentive for R&D for the drug companies to a federal prize system (co-funded by insurance companies). It's an interesting idea, is it not?

This video is amazing! Eastern European, fat, magnetic children are the wave of the future.
While on the topic of inhospitable corners of the Earth and the people that head off to them, here is Fridtjof Nansen. World class Nordic skier, polar explorer, biologist, oceanographer, naval architect, diplomat, Nobel Laureate, and humanitarian. Interestingly enough, his facial hair ranks about 9th in his list of lifetime achievements. Read his bio, it reads like fiction, but it's true

It's Everest Season! No matter how you feel about the commercialization of the highest place on Earth (if you feel anything about it at all), it is, without a doubt, some very compelling stuff. Man against Nature. Personal conflicts in tiny, freezing tents on mountainsides 5 miles above sea level. Egos nearly as big as the peaks themselves. And the whole time Sherpas (like Phurba Tashi pictured above) carrying loads as heavy as themselves up the mountain and sometimes carrying the clients back down, literally on their back.
