Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.
"I can note your interest in that feature for future development."
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What? What's happening? A hug. It's, uh, usually not something one does by themselves. Oh, I— wait, I do the same? Would you just get in here?
PROJECT HAIL MARY (2026) dir. Phil Lord & Chris Miller
I reeeeeally loved Project Hail Mary and I'm definitely gonna go see it again but I had some (competing) thoughts on casting. I thought Ryan Gosling was absolutely lovely, so really these are not complaints. I feel at least a little bad I'm having these thoughts, actually, because he was wonderful as Grace. But, whatever, it's not like I'm hurting anyone with them lol.
I can't tell if this is just because I have Pitt brainworms, but after seeing what Noah Wyle can do with his face, the microexpressions, the subtle but somehow also extremely clear and fine window into his characters' emotional states, I could not help thinking the entire time that I wished I could see him in this role. He would have been luminous.
I also really wished they'd chosen a man of color to play Grace. Like...nothing is stopping this character from being played by a man of color. Why does it have to be a white man who saves the world? I was thinking Aldis Hodge or Kenneth Choi. They both have the chops both dramatically and comedically. I really would have liked to see this with a man of color at the helm.
I think either way but especially for point #2, studios are thinking about star power and who audiences will go out to the theaters to see in what is essentially a 2.5-hour one-man show. It's about name recognition AND likeability. It's about the fact that these movies were risks because the casts were so small and the budgets so big, so they can't take the extra risk of casting people without a guaranteed box office draw. We're talking Tom Hanks in Castaway, Matt Damon in The Martian, Will Smith in I Am Legend--and Will Smith could have been a wonderful Grace too, if he hadn't fallen from, you know, grace. The only way these movies got the greenlight was if their stars could essentially be bombproof, and Wyle/Hodge/Choi aren't capital M Movie Stars.
So like, I get it. It's not that I don't get why it had to be someone like Ryan Gosling. An A-lister without any whiffs of scandal attached to his name. And he was good! That's not the issue. I just wish such a big movie with such a beautiful, hopeful heart at its center could have moved forward with a less expected lead. That the hope and future of humanity could have had a different kind of face.
I feel all of this 100%. This was Gosling’s baby from start to finish (he personally courted the author for rights and wanted to be as involved as humanly possible in all aspects up to/including starring), but having read (and loved) the book first and pictured someone less movie-star handsome as Grace, it would have been nice to see…someone who looks more like just some dude thrust into extraordinary circumstances as Grace. Would have also loved if they’d taken the box-office-riskier but braver route and gone with a lead actor of color instead. You know who would have also killed it? My bb Steve Yeun. All that said I was really impressed with Gosling’s performance. I haven’t enjoyed him in much for awhile and he really cracked himself open for the role, and it showed.
forget your zodiac tell me what you order at a bar and at a coffee shop

This scene absolutely floored me. So much emotion in this moment. It's so beautiful!

So whenever my husband gets stoned he makes up new character names for future D&D campaigns. He recently furnished me with the running list:
@trinittysantos "You've a soft heart and a pure soul, that's why you feel everything so deeply"
some choice quotes from patients during my first week of clinicals:
“Yeah well so’s Christmas 😡😡😡” —after I told someone that their nurse was coming soon
*patient farts* “Ope, horn section!”
me: “Would you like me to brush your hair, sir, or would you rather do it yourself?”
him: *raises his arm stump from under the blankets and looks at me pointedly*
“Weeeeeeee!” —patient being zoomed down the hallway to the showers in a rolling bath chair
