The Beginning Of a New Series
I have debated with the idea of documenting the creation of this new series over the past couple of months but have finally come to the conclusion that documenting this series is the right thing to do.
Having lived in Toronto for over a year now I have this unrelenting urge to explore. I have my safety net in the downtown core that I am incredibly familiar with but I'm left with the feeling that there is so much missing from my Toronto Experience. With this series I want to shift focus from the popular "everyday" areas of Toronto. The viewer won't see any popular buildings or monuments in this piece. The purpose is to expose and examine areas of Toronto that are not common to everyone.
I have received much of my inspiration from the works of Lewis Baltz and Robert Adams two men who had a major impact on the New Topographics movement beginning around 1975. The New Topographics movement was a type of American Landscape photography that took its focus away from the natural landscape and showed photographs of a Man-Altered landscape.
I have decided to take a similar approach to Baltz in naming these pieces but instead of having very detailed names I have opted to use geographic coordinates. This serves the same purpose which is to make it easier for the viewer to go out and see the area for themselves. I will also be including a link to a google street view so that they will be able to easily discover the area.
This is a project that will take many years to complete but I hope to say that one day I will have covered many of the areas in Toronto that are often overlooked.
Please join me on this adventure of urban discovery!
