Thinking abt parallax as a rape allegory and i feel ill for not discovering this before

when it comes to possessions and the loss of bodily autonomy, the connection is always there to make and with parallax's obsession with hal and the terms it uses for him (my precious, my host, [my] significant other), or how it refers to being one with hal again a pleasure and its possession of hal an union hal must stop fighting, I'm surprised i haven't seen this discussed more. sinestro calls parallax a demon lover, and in that very same issue hal is forced to "submit" to it and left alone in tattered clothes. it forces significant changes on hal's body, worsens his mental state and goes after everybody hal cares about - really it's all there and it's not surprising that this comes from the personification of fear.

(there's more to say about how the different emotional entities enact violence on/ control the people that use its powers - the predator is very much an allegory for sexual assault as well, doesn't matter which version of it you reference; whether it's pre-crisis where he forces a kiss out of carol (who is him and is star sapphire) or it's a demonic entity that got star sapphire pregnant, thus denying carol of her autonomy OR if it's simply the entity of love that preys on carol's emotions and declares its love for her. but that's a separate topic)

She asked Dinah one time to send her everything she wore during a mission for "DNA samples" but actually she's just snorting her panties. She paid Dick after sex one time simply to make him feel weird.

so much of carol's life is defined by the misogyny she faces at the hands of everybody around her but especially at the hands of her father. she is being punished for being born the wrong gender while at the same time having to take up the role of her father's only heir, her being born a woman is a shame but she must also be the son. due to all of this- from carl ferris' abuse of his daughter to the constant control over her life, it all results in a very emotionally incestous dynamic as well.

when we first meet carol we also meet her father! and right off the bat the very first thing we learn about their relationship is that carol's father is disappointed she was born a girl. this is a constant theme of how carol must live up to the expectations that are set before her, how she represses every part of herself to please her father.

carol has proven herself to be as good as any son, and yet, her name is a mockery of herself and her gender- a token to express his disappointment in having a daughter. the name "carol" itself represents what she will always lack!

carol feels abandoned by her mother, she's only a daddy's girl and she's frustrated by her whole future being set out for her by him and yet he dismisses everything she did for his company as "female playtime". carol is both his only son and least favourite daughter. her taste in men is shaped by carl's influence on her, her personality is shaped by his abuse of her, the picture that is painted for us makes it seem like it was just the two of them in this world; carol's mother was always absent so she had to fill in the role of every member of the family.

and most of all her identity as star sapphire is shaped by her father's influence on her. she dreams of her father playing the organ while singing a romantic song to her and beckoning her closer. the organ which has always been used to mess with carol's mind and manipulate her- to turn her into the star sapphire by the zamarons, beings with infinite power over, her even though she might be their queen. that's precisely the dynamic we're presented with these two here, carol may have taken carl's place now but in her mind he still controls her, still pushes her to her base needs.

as carl's rendition of "embraceable you" enchants carol, she dreams of herself sitting in her daddy's lap as if she were ten years old and this tender illusion is broken only by her father being replaced by star sapphire. "don't be a naughty baby" -> "that's a good baby". the very representation of carol's repressed desires, be they violent or sexual (or both!) in nature, showing face as she reminisces over one of the few good memories she might've shared with her father. star sapphire is the part of carol that is her father. the neglect, or just the different forms of abuse, that carol suffered at the hands of her father, the emotional incest present within them all cultivates in this very fantasy that carol dreams of. this wish of being too close with her father because all she's known from him was distance.
