A great find for an old baseball fan like me!
Formed in 1936 from workers at the Silver Falls Timber Company, the Silverton Red Sox was a hard working, hard playing semi-pro ball club rated third in the national standings of 1939. The superintendent of the timber company, Bill McGinnis, also becase the coach and general manager of The Sox. The club was partially funded by Tom Yawkey and Ben Alexander of the Boxton Red Sox, and was considered a farm team for the Boston club. Silverton was consistently in contension for every championship until the 1943 season, when it was disbanded for the war. In 1950, the team was re-established, but could no longer rely on the sawmill for players and financing. Both needs were filled by the community. Home games were played at McGinnis Field, and the entire population of Silverton turned out to cheer them on until their last season of 1954. Three of the team’s players, Joe Erautt, Dick Whitman, and Johnny Pesky, went on to the Major Leagues.Today, the Red Sox carry on in their current incarnation as an amateur baseball team playing in the 40+ division of the Willamette Valley Mens Baseball League.

Remembering Babe "The Sultan of Swat" Ruth on the anniversary of his 1948 passing. I signed a baseball to thank Babe for the great baseball memories and left it at his grave in 2016. I wonder if it is still there? Cemetery images only by Rob Nagy 2016
