Exhibition News: I am excited to be showing some volteface.online work with Sara-Aimee Verity for Gallery, Gallery’s new exhibition opening on the 23rd of November titled ‘...she finds not her sum but her differences’ here is a short extract on us from the programme.
“Based on the notion of the ouroboros, volteface.online sets the lemniscate form of research-forming-research on an endless feedback loop, able to generate offshoots and wanderings. Using materials available to them - wood off-cuts, gloves, string and a camera, Robyn Nesbitt and Sara-Aimee Verity started to let the collective action of moving props and building from what has become and intuitive and generative language for volteface. In the gallery, volteface presents a series of thinking videos and props, which have formed the starting point of their exchange.” - Gallery, Gallery Johannesburg.

Field note: The Fallen, 2017 is a video which was made in conversation with my Masters research paper titled The feeling I get when things fall, 2017 which unpacks the affect (feeling) of witnessing the removal of political statues from public spaces, namely the El General Franco equestrian statue in Barcelona and the Cecil John Rhodes statue in Cape Town.

A middle-aged man in military wear sits poised on an alert horse. Both the horse and rider’s gaze are directed and concentrated. They are moving forward in a collected trot towards an invisible horizon line. The man’s hand is cast out in the direction of his land or followers representing the conquest or the conquered. This sculpture is contained within the courtyard or parade ground of The Montjuïc Castle.

Title: Wang’ Thola: a History of the Present
2014 - 2015 Wang’ Thola collective (Robyn Nesbitt, Sifiso Temba, Sifiso Gumede, Goolam Saber. Lindo Zwane, Lebohang Motaung, and Matthews Makgotho).
Wang' Thola - is a Slang word for "Do you know what I mean?" "You get this?" "You get me?" "You starting something?" - Supposedly derived from Zulu and Sotho.
The collective’s objectives is around generating, discussing and curating a History of the Present. We come together weekly, hosting discussions, workshops and public performances engaging with our immediate surroundings.
Wang’ Thola’s interests are around how one creates, defines and names a community though the limits of space/land/culture/home and language - This is something that as a collective we trying to outline ourselves - Where are the parameters/boundaries of a community and who and what forms it, the roles of community members and how one plays a part in defining these boundaries through active citizenship and possibly in our case through art interventions.
Our practice is multifaceted using video, zines, interviews, posters, murals, workshops and screenings as tools to generate conversation.
We are currently involved in a year long (2014 – 2015) public arts project in collaboration with VANSA (Visual Arts Network of South Africa), Revolution Room in Cosmo City.

A List for Remembering: Cataloging of curious coincidences is an ongoing series of studio light observations started in Switzerland while on residency at PROGR in 2013. These and new studies will be added to the collection for the duration of the exhibition at ROOM, exploring the notion of light in the visible and invisible documentation of everyday studio process and practice. Experiments are left ongoing, works exist in process and are protected under constant observation - the marking and acknowledging of time and the depiction of that action.
