CALAMITY
Cid requests you talk to as many soldiers as possible. Some of them are open to the idea of peace, a few of them fight you.
My favorite is this guy you accost in the bathroom.
Emperor Gestahl is ready to treat with us to end the war
I guess I’m supposed to be *horrified by the violence* or something but really I love what they did with the place.
We follow the espers on their way to wreak bloody vengeance on Vector
and we crash the ship
:(
In a sequence I didn’t capture very well, espers fly from the (un)Sealed Gate, blowing Kefka away and bowling over our heroes. Rocks fall in front of the Gate, re-sealing it.
What do they want?
The elemental triad of Final Fantasy VI: Shiva, Ifrit, and Ramuh ❄️🔥⚡️
“You can’t keep a status effect on just because it looks cool!”
[I’m playing all mainline Final Fantasy games]
I kind of miss “human-loving, fast-talking, street-smart, SLAM-dancing moogle” which is maybe more characterization than her ever gets in the GBA version, but here we are.
Mog was also present on the screens where your different characters’ paths diverged, which suggests he is telling the story somehow or is some sort of supernatural entity and not just a humble moogle.
So now we can recruit an optional party member, kupo.
The way to recruit him is kind of esoteric, kupo.
There are some hints in town about moogles and a Yeti, but you can’t get the Yeti yet (but you can see him, kupo!)
You have to go into a little warehouse and chase after Lone Wolf (the pickpocket), who also made an appearance in V, kupo. You chase him to where you fought Kefka before, and he threatens the moogle.
Mog escapes, kupo!
You can choose to take the Gold Hairpin from Lonewolf, but then Mog falls and you don’t get him in your party.
Who could be so heartless, kupo?!
...
How much stuff did Ramuh influence and what are/were the extent of his powers?
Back in Narshe, we plan our next attack
But first
FFVI is so understated in its drama
A few musings:
1) Maduin stayed in Imperial captivity nearly 20 years before giving his life for the first people that came along who wanted to help, never realizing his magicite would end up in the hands of his daughter
2) How does Terra react when she realizes her father is one of the magicite they have now? There’s never a scene or anything.
3) Did Maduin know Terra was captured by the Empire? Did rumors of what she was and what they were doing to her ever reach his test tube?
4) Did Celes know that the process of becoming a Magitek Knight meant sacrificing a sentient creature and grafting it to her? How did she feel about it before all this and how did she feel about equipping magicite later?
I have always wondered that about Celes. I mean at Narshe, she says she heard “rumors,” but her foster granddad was the guy who invented the whole process… I’ve always felt that she could have been ignorant of what it entailed, but only by taking pains to ensure she never learned.

They do allude to a couple of these things. When they return with the magicite, they place it in Terra’s hands, and she says “Father…” Then the flashback kicks off. Since it tells of things that happen before Terra’s birth, it can be assumed he’s somehow relating the story.
The first time they go to Zozo, Sabin asks Celes if the rumors about espers being drained are true. She says she was asleep when she was infused, but she’s heard those rumors. My gut tells me that it was done when she was pretty young, but that might be headcanon since I can’t remember any specific reference to it in-game ATM. (And I have it damn near memorized, so lol)
I remember her saying at one point that she was young when it happened
rumongray said: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the reason that Terra reverts back to her human form is because her father’s magicite is one of the stones that they brought back with them. So it calmed her down in a way, and sparks her memories of where she came from.
You’re right! But it’s so... barely there in the script that the first time I played the game I’m pretty sure I didn’t even realize Maduin was an esper you now had in your inventory.
With FFVII and X, and probably IV and VIII, I feel like I know about all there is to know about them. With VI, I know plenty of people have played and thought about and love this game more than me, so input is welcome.
