Baddest on The Block: Rochelle Jordan
We are thrilled to kick off the new year with our latest baddie OnTheBlock, singer/songwriter Rochelle Jordan. This talented young lady has been in the game for a while and recently released her debut album 1021. We had the pleasure to ask her some questions about her music, career and style.
For those that have been living under a rock, please give our readers a short introduction to who Rochelle Jordan is.
I’m a singer/songwriter born in the UK, raised in Canada and now living in Los Angeles. To sum me up real quick: I love animals, I drink a lot of tea and make a lot of R&B music.
How did you get into the music business?
I’ve been singing since the age of 4, but never really thought much of it. It was just something I enjoyed. So really, it started with me coming out of high school, throwing videos up on YouTube of me singing just for fun. I started to gain traction, which turned into me meeting my in-house producer KLSH online. We started creating songs, which then unfolded a whole world of music I really was not aware of being from a small town outside of Toronto.
We are now 3 projects deep with the release of my new album 1021 which came out this November… and yeah, its just been a really exciting past few years. Living my dream.
Your career has been going really well the last couple of years, what has been a highlight so far?
Honestly, being able to cultivate a devoted fan base off of the music we create from nothing. That is probably the biggest highlight. It’s pretty unreal.
What are your dreams and goals for the future?
I’m just aiming for success. Whatever that may be, it’s what I’m going for. I’d love to work with many people, such as Drake, Pharrell, Charli XCX, etc. I think that would be mad cool. And with all that being said, the plan is for my music to take me all over the world to perform. I love to travel so I plan on hitting as many places I can to share my music!
Do you have any words of advice for upcoming artists?
Now on to fashion. How would you describe your style?
I’m very simple when it comes to fashion – you’ll find me in all black. I’m not the over accessorized type, I just like to be laid back. I grew up as a tomboy, influenced by two big brothers, so I have an actual natural attraction to menswear – nothing to do with what’s trending right now. I do embrace my feminine style from time to time, but I literally hated girly clothes growing up. I was always the tallest female in my class growing up, so I associated dresses with high heels and I really didn’t want to be any taller, haha! So I guess my style comes from influences of my childhood years merged with the woman I’ve become.
