Reminder: Those who turned themselves in to the psych ward are just as much victims of the system as those who were forced. We are fed so much propaganda that people who admit themselves might genuinely think it could help, especially people who have never been around people who have been admitted or like 4000 other factors that might convince them its a good idea. Victim blaming them gets us NOWHERE as a community.

I think it's really problematic to suggest that psych wards don't help. I think it's a monumentally terrible idea to deter people from a last resort option.

If you have an uncontrollable urge to harm or kill yourself, then someone should be watching over you and getting you to a point where you aren't an active danger to yourself (or others).

I admitted myself to one a week after I tried to overdose my senior year of highschool. I am so grateful for my time there. It gave me the time, resources, and space I needed to not be in a place where I was actively going to harm myself.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are terrible psych hospitals, and I drove an hour and a half away so I could admit myself to a better one. There 100% be more oversight on facilities and more research into treatment effectiveness and care. But I think it's very unfair to say they aren't needed.
