“As long as we don’t turn into out fathers, hmm?” He grins but it’s strained just a fraction of an inch. “You...uh...Follow your gut more?”

“Mm,” Rabastan replied, not thinking he was that lucky at all but not saying so. “Go ahead,” he allowed with a nod.

“How friendly are you and that half blood I hear you’ve spent time with?”

“I feel like I forgot how moody he was while I was away so it seems even worse.”

“Consider yourself lucky.” Merlin knows, Rodolophus does, not that he’d have wanted to switch places. Any time Rabastan spent away from their father was considered good in Rodolphus’s books. “May I ask you something?”

“Old dog being the operative word. Well how do I learn a trick that involves instinct? Seems to me that you are either blessed with such a sense about the world or you are not.”

“Of course. You are still in the spring of our youth.” He laughs. “Perhaps there is a grain of truth to that. But I think with enough practice one who wasn’t blessed can learn, yes?”

Antonin nodded. “No you’re right. Instinct and intuition are good traits to have, they just weren’t ever really bestowed upon me. It’s a liability and a strength but I don’t pretend to have it all.”

“Haven't you heard the adage that even old dogs can learn new tricks? There’s still hope for you.”

“Good, I could do without a lecture for a few days,” he replied with a small nod.

“You and me both. He’s been in a right mood for months now hasn’t he?”

“They are certainly not but we still have to bide our time don’t we.” He shook his head with a sigh. “Not really but I understand that others have good feelings. I prefer logic and reason and whatever is exactly in front of me. I’m glad that you have a good feeling though.”

“Unfortunately.” Rod says, sighing heavily. He’d rather not bide his time at all if he had his way. “Logic and reason are key, no doubt. But having a good feeling never hurt, no?”

“At least muggles can be exploited for their ignorance.” He offered. “I don’t like to count my chickens before they hatch and I honestly couldn’t care less what happens to them truth be told. What makes you so sure?”

“Hmm. I suppose. But I’m not sure they’re even worth it half the time.” He shrugs, not at all interested in talking muggles. He smiles. “Perhaps I am counting my chickens but...I have a good feeling, you know?”

“Father’s like that no matter what,” Rabastan replied with a sigh before giving in. “Fine.”

“You’re not wrong.” He smiles though. “Perfect. I’m sure between the both of us he’ll be too distracted to do much more than huff and puff at mother. He’s been on me since I broke things off with Rowle and going alone...I shudder at the thought.”

“Then by all means,” she replied with a roll of her eyes, “I’d hate to stand in the way of you warning your little brother of the girl who hurt your feelings at the pool.”

“Quaint. It thinks it hurt my feelings. That’s a laugh.”

“You can leave now. We’re done here.”

“Um, well, I do realize that you’re his brother,” she replies slowly, truly unsure of what to make of the entire conversation. “You do realize I only have spoken to him in passing, right? We literally just watched a movie after I had to stop him from punching some random while at work.”

He smiles again, sharp and unwelcoming. “In passing is more than reason enough to point out a bad egg when you find one.”

“Do you even hear yourself when you speak? Besides, I think your brother is clearly far more capable of choosing his own company than you are.”

“I hear myself quite clearly. Sounds perfectly normal to me.” He grins. “He certainly is. But my opinion means more to him than I think you give it credit.”

“Given your brother’s lack of cinematic exposure despite having decent manners, that really doesn’t surprise me.”

“See, I just don’t believe you. Why would someone so proud and pureblood deign to use something so terribly muggle as that. After all, if it’s muggle then it must not be worth using if there’s a wizarding alternative. That’s just your own logic.”

“At least you recognize manners when you see them. That’s....something.”

“I am not having this discussion with a stray mutt. It’s beneath me. I’ll be speaking to Rabastan about his choice of company as of late as well.”

“It’s a wonder that I ended up running a business that serves wizards and witches given how much their tendencies generally annoy me. Though I don’t it’s definitely helped me in the art of keeping expectations low.”

“Just be glad you don’t work with muggles. Think of the headaches they would cause.” He rolls his eyes and scoffs. “They’ll have their comeuppance soon enough, mark my words.”

“A movie,” she replied slowly, as though she were speaking to a child.

“I see,” she replied, fighting back a laugh as she had gotten the answer she’d hoped for. “So… do you just like shit yourself then? Because obviously you have the capabilities to avoid using something as terribly muggle as a toilet.”

“Can’t say I’ve seen it.”

“Of course not. I use a chamber pot that my personal house elf deals with.” He says it deadpan, totally serious. He hangs onto the moment for a moment longer before rolling his eyes and scoffing loudly. “Of course I use a toilet you vulgar child.”
