Wireless World for My Ears with Jabra Revo
Bluetooth headphones are not new in the world of audio accessories, ranging from in-ear buds/bands to one-ear headsets to stereo on/over-ear headsets. Use cases vary from chatting on the go
Wireless Worlds: Home, Office, Subway Despite a variety of AirPlay compatible products (and soon a Sonos), I prefer listening to specific music on my ears instead of through bookcase speakers streamed from an iDevice. There's an intimacy that comes from hearing a muted trumpet or bass drop when attempting to read fiction or play with Python. The intimacy is amplified by situation and posture agnostic mobility, allowing for a quick trip for another glass of Malbec or changing from knees up on back to hunched over my Mac while on the couch.
Most wired headphones are long enough to reach from a pants pocket to ears of an above-average torso, which gives a short 3.5 feet of freedom from jack to ear. This makes my plug-and-play monitor setup a disaster at work, as cables are stretching across laptop or behind the monitor. What's the point in comfortable desk setups if an umbilical cord attaches to my ears?
Optimal Setup with Jabra Revo Inductive charging with primary pairing to a phone. Why? Range is limited to 33 feet, and this makes a quick stroll around the office or home hard to handle without catching distorted or dropped audio quality, whether it be Spotify or GoToMeeting. Pairing with a phone that has inductive charging means grab-and-go, which involves one less step than unplugging a phone to toss in a pocket.
Quick pros
Long battery life
Folding design
Passive capacity when battery depletes
Quick cons
Pinch effect from (any) on-ear design with headband
Short range Bluetooth
Muted microphone
A few of my favorite film and digital pictures from a trip to Iceland between Christmas and New Year's. Shot with Minolta X-700 and Panasonic Lumix GX7.
Building an SLR: Lomography's DIY Konstruktor Camera
Within the past few months, I started spending more time with photography and took it from the hobby to-do list and placed it at the forefront of packing for trips. Partly inspired by coworkers, and an interest that has been sitting for a while, I packed my Minolta X-700 SLR on a trip to London in December with a 50mm to chase wide aperture shots. This interest sparked heyyojkao to gift a series of Lomography's DIY Konstruktor camera kits; an awesome gift that completely surprised me. Let's unbox and see the results
As three separate units, there is the camera body a fixed aperture lens, a close-up lens, macro lens, and magnifying chimney hood.
Lomography claims 1-2 hours to build the Konstruktor body, and as a former Lego aficionado I balked at the time estimate for a series of plastic parts.
Their estimate was dead-on, finishing the body took around 90 minutes. The largest challenge came from tiny screws and big hands, and I suspect smaller hands or a magnetic screwdriver would have helped significantly. This didn't impact the other two sets as much.
With fewer parts and steps, the chimney hood and close-up/macro lens kit both took around 15 minutes each.
Completed camera and lens are decently solid, though the camera body certainly feels like it needs careful handling to prevent anything from happening to the knobs on top, and a tiny spring inside the body for the shutter release. Overall it was an awesome DIY project for anyone interested in photography, especially as a stepping stone into film.
Pros
Fun to build
Great evening/weekend project
Relatively inexpensive
Cons
Screws for body kit were very similar shapes (for 20/15 vision)
Large hands make a few steps difficult
Careful handling for dubious durability
A few of my favorite film shots from almost 2 months back during a trip to London. This was my first foray into film since 9 years back when I bought my Minolta X-700 for $200 from my father when he upgraded to a Nikon.
A few shots from a stroll around Upper West Side from Central Park West to Riverside Park. Exploring off semi-cleared sidewalks, slush seeped into my sneakers. Definitely worth cold feet.
The Two Oldest Cats on record lived to 38 and 34 years old, both were owned by the same owner and lived off a diet of bacon, eggs, broccoli and coffee.

Sharpie mug DIY project this weekend. Bought 2 mugs, cleaned the surface with Windex, and drew a few designs. Messed up a few times and used rubbing alcohol to pull the ink from the mug. When ready to finalize, placed in the oven and let mugs heat to 425 and bake at that temperature for 30 minutes.
