On the Subject of Morality: Inherent Subjectivity and How To Be A Moral Atheist
I've heard many arguments for why atheists are amoral, godless creatures with zero sense of compassion or decency. Obviously this is no argument, just a common attempt at character assassination, and I'm beginning to get fed up with the people who make this "argument" and then don't listen to the rebuttal.
A Brief Summary The argument from morality is an old one, and I'm sure many of you who have been with the community of debating theists for a long time have heard this argument. If you haven't, I'll explain. Feel free to skip this if you already know. The argument from morality comes from the misconception that God is the ultimate authority, and therefore without God you will immediately fall into animalistic urges, raping and slaughtering and stealing. It's unfortunately a very prominent argument due to a fairly recent video made by Prager Institute called "If God Isn't Real, Then Murder Isn't Wrong." I suggest you take a look for an in-depth view of the argument.
Why They're Wrong Obviously very few people like to murder. And few like to be murdered. Which makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. If you're murdered, you can't pass your genes on. In any case, not many atheists I've met actually want to kill people or be killed themselves. But why? It's simple, really. Empathy and common sense.
If you have empathy, and aren't 2 years old, you can generally put yourself into someone else's shoes and understand that they don't want to be murdered, either. So an agreement comes from this, as they also do the same to you. "I won't murder you, if you don't murder me." It's a very simple concept, it truly is. You just have to understand that morality being subjective isn't a bad thing.
