Sketchup and Photoshop before and after comparison of the work I’ve done.
I finding sketching to be a great tool for resolving the look and function of a space. Plan drawings are great for working out how a building will function but it is rare to ever view a space from this angle. Designing in section helps narrate the human element and emotion of the building.
Chimphamba Playground, Malawi. This was an internal competition at UJ to design a playground for a school in Malawi. I explored the use of berms to sculpt an icon into the landscape, and used tectonics to create a shading membrane which would harvest rainwater.
Genius / Genii - A Roman Concept of having two guardian spirits looking over you, giving extraordinary ability. This concept later evolved to form new ideas of ‘spirit’ and ‘inspiration’. Genius Loci is now used in the architectural realm to describe the essence of place (Porter 2004:10)
The relationship of design to construction should be inseparable. Never sacrifice the design due to the difficulty of the construction. This project deals with a stair detail using inspiration from the human body.
This project deals with a mid-rise, multi-use building for migrant users of Johannesburg. Temporary citizens looking for work are offered skills development in food production and cultivation. A ground floor market opens up to the street during the day, allowing for interactions between pedestrian foot-traffic and the residents of the space.
The transformation of abandoned warehouses in communal housing units within the heart of Johannesburg is a unique phenomenon which is spreading quietly. Hidden behind the exterior facade, there is an enormous potential for skills development, job opportunities and trade.
I studied a warehouse in Maboneng, analysing its potential for student accommodation and economic function. My design solution was to create an interspersed combination of living spaces for social interaction and relaxation. The structure would serve as a safe haven for foreigners during the harsh xenophobic climate of the time, as well as for students and families seeking temporary residence within the CBD.
