Mother of Monsters by Tharivious
AT Loki’s Hands, Pt 3: Truceless After I was shown the Net, I was left trembling in awe, my heart beating in my throat; I had found out something important about myself and where my heart (oh, and …
Dear tumblr, I give you the third of my Month for Loki posts. In short, I talk about how I started exploring my new-found connection with Him in earnest. Yeah, serious Lokean here, and proud!
I would like to state that the interactions I describe the post are strong, and some are even very strong, impressions I got while in a light trance/meditating. They are mine and mine alone, and if your mileage varies, that is perfectly fine. I am also well aware of the questionability of the “originalness" of Loki’s ordeal in the cave. This is what I “saw".
What happened has *nothing* to do with astral projection or any kind of absolute truth—-or, at least that truth, I believe, is on a whole different level of reality; that doesn’t mean those experiences aren’t real.
One thing about tricksters that few people seem to understand is that they inevitably hold mirrors up with which to view ourselves. The reflections we see might not be very flattering, nor what we want to acknowledge about ourselves. They might make us angry, embarrass us, or — if we are not diligent in pursuing honest self-knowledge — go way over our heads as we fall victim to the seduction of our own delusions. This willful self-deception can only continue for so long, however, before the mirror shatters and the trickster becomes us, talking back to us with our own voices in a way that is impossible to ignore any longer. (Speaking from personal experience, it is better to acknowledge the truth that the trickster is trying to promote, rather than to continue being in denial until it gets to this point.)

Thunder growls low on the horizon: it’s been raining for days, with no end in sight. The dampness frays tempers, wilts cheer, erodes patience: but not Yours. You’re right there, of course, grabbing my hands and tugging me out into the downpour, into the thick of things, where we’re buffeted by wind and drenched by water, laughing and whooping and dancing ’til we fall down, shrieking and still clinging together, to land in the mud, where –although exposed to the elements still– I find, in Your arms, a better shelter than any roof.

July for Loki - Day 17
A Month for Loki: Day 21
I baked some wonderful Nutella scones, because I wanted to offer Loki sweets but there were none in my house, so I made something. And there are enough to share with my family and also take for myself, which makes me happy. While I was baking them, I realized I was out of heavy cream so I had to use hazelnut coffee creamer as an alternative, which actually worked really well. And then as I was about to put them in the oven, I realized there was no parchment paper. I was more than fucking sure I had parchment paper left from the last time I baked and no one else used any, so I do not know why it was all gone, but it made my baking process a little more chaotic than I wanted…….. *accusing glares*
This is the thing I did last night. I’m not a baker so I had a difficult time of them, but I got them on the altar in the end, along with some tea, and they were well-received.

A Month for Loki: Day 15
I found this wonderful poem by Elizabeth Vongvisith called Hymn To Loki, from the book "Trickster, My Beloved: Poems for Laufey´s Son." I thought I’d share it, since I enjoyed reading it aloud for Him.
Hail to my lord, flickering flame of Ásgarð, Burning brand of Jotunheim. Hail to you, Laufey´s son, Scar-lip, Sky-traveler, Giants´-son, Mother of Sleipnir, Wolf´s-sire, father of Hela and Jormungand.
Hail to you, Shapeshifter, skilled thief and magician, Always surprising with your sly, bold ways; Bringer of unforeseen gifts, bringer of changes, Bringer of endings and new beginnings.
Hail, my beloved, who speaks brazen truths. Dazzling, daring, delightful Fool and Trickster, Your speech stings the unwary like shards of shattered mirror. Your cunning cuts deep as a drawn and deadly sword.
Hail to you, Flame-hair, Ás-consort of Angrboða, Beloved husband of Sigyn, Oðinn´s true blood-brother, Ŧorr´s friend and companion, lover of goddesses and giants, Brilliant, bright-eyed, too beautiful to resist.
Hail to you, ever-defiant Breaker-of-Worlds, Wielding your own wyrd, faithful to your sworn word, Mindful of your honor, with honor accorded by few, Enduring the world´s scorn until the Nine Worlds´ end.
Hail Loki, lightning-born child of the Iron Wood. Fire of my heart, fire of my soul´s hearth, Swift-footed Elder Kin, bright as the burning stars, Dark as the deep forest standing fearsome in shadow.
Hail Loki, Laufey´s son, flickering flame of Ásgarð, Burning brand of Jotunheim. Hail to you, Clever stealer of treasures, wild Father-of-Monsters, Ever changing the world, now and forever.
One day I’m gonna finish this pic. One day. Eventually. In the meantime have a goofy preview!
(Thor, Loki, and Odin, in the forms they usually choose to appear to me as. Slightly cartoonified, obvs.)
Finally finished this beast. I’m definitely not entirely satisfied with this, but I think its about time I kicked it off my hard drive and onto the internet where hopefully other people will enjoy it. This is one of the most intensive pieces of devotional art I think I’ve ever worked on. Well over 100 hours of work, I think. When Thor instructed me to make Loki a knotwork circle, I didn’t expect it to be this elaborate.
Also, just a reminder, exilefromlife did an awesome job coloring this!
If you want to try your hand at some devotional coloring, here’s a link to the lineart.
(If anyone wants a high rez copy of this, just let me know. :D )
Okay so today for Lokabrenna, in the span of like… an hour or so? I managed to find my watercolors- which was a bad idea, I shouldn’t be allowed to touch them- and decided to paint a little something for Loki.
And then my scanner butchered it because it is not intended for such use.
However, I’m still reasonably pleased with it. In person, the bottom edge is more purple (because that’s the color spectra I associate with Him, purple-red-orange-yellow), but overall it translated pretty well.
Not sure what to do with it now, but it’ll probably go on His altar.

This is a really important post to read and remember.
Part of my whole discernment/comprehension process where Loki is concerned is keeping this mirroring in mind. Is Loki actually angry at me, for example, or is He showing me anger about a particular thing I’ve done to make me stop being angry at myself over that thing? Etc.
And sometimes I’ve wondered - like the author of the above post - how much of His behavior is mirroring something bigger, not my baggage but my own notions of who/what He is, or how I expect or hope Him to be. I’ve wondered this observing other people’s commentary about the sides of Loki that they have seen, because I’ve seen so many times how neatly some bit of Loki’s behavior seems so well-suited to the person describing that (and I don’t think it’s all sock puppeting). Does He -really- have that opinion, or is it just showing someone something they want to see, to have validated in some way, to feel less alone?
He’s so often given me the impression that He agrees with my opinions on things, and I find it frustrating, because who does that so often! It’s inhuman!! It makes me skeptical if He really does agree, or He’s just taking me for a ride, or trying to encourage me to keep talking, or … What I’m saying is that it makes me kind of paranoid about everything.
I know that gods are capable of showing many different aspects of Themselves to better teach a lesson, or because that is the best way to interact, but even knowing that Loki is a complex being Who has a WIDE RANGE of interests, I wonder if there’s more going on than just that, if it’s all mirrors, masks, another way He’s mirroring my own preconceived ideas, my own hopes - and fears, at times - rather than showing me what He really thinks or feels.
In the end, I find it difficult to say what He’s really like. What He really likes, or cares about, other than big vague things like “work on your issues."
It is very strange to feel so close to someone, to love them so deeply, when you simultaneously know you don’t know them at all.
OOC: Oh hey, we missed this blog’s birthday. StrandedInMidgard was opened on 7th May in 2012 and for some reason it’s still alive. Thanks to all of you for sticking with me. Here’s a proud Loki. He’s proud of you, guys. Maybe.
I want to comment on this when I see every single one of your posts, but I also don’t want to break the RP too much. BUT I adore the way you draw Him. It’s absolutely perfect. Keep up the good work!
My apologies.
With the Month For Loki, I wanted to be able to post every day. But I got really sick and it was hard for me to keep up with updates - I would like to apologize to my followers for the slack-off.
Back to regular posting now.
"Thor and the World Serpent."
I have completed my latest painting in my Norse series, “Thor and the World Serpent.” In Snorri Sturluson’s “Prose Edda”, Thor and the giant Hymir embark on a fishing trip. Thor, using the head of an ox as bait, catches Jormungand, the World Serpent on the end of his line. Fearful Hymir cuts Thor’s fishing line before he can slay the monster with his hammer and the serpent escapes to live another day.
See more about how the image was created at my blog.
In my announcement post, I mentionded I intend to post four drawings for Loki this month. So, that is basically what this series titled “At Loki’s Hands” is: it consists of four drawings, the first of which is attached to this post. Each of the drawings depicts something about Loki that was important to me during the past year—one drawing for each quarter of the year gone by.
This first one is called “Tapped“—and as the title suggests, indeed one year ago I was a freshly tapped new devotee to Loki, Whom I have come to love more than I ever thought I could someone so different from myself. A God. If I think about it today, the sheer magnitude of what happened almost scares me. The way I have come on this path since the late spring, and early summer of 2012 I’m utterly unable to describe.

Gods are, in some ways, very like us. They hurt and sorrow and do things They may later regret. Sometimes, for reasons we don’t understand, they ignore people who seem worthy and favor those who don’t. They might act towards humans in ways that are frustrating, scary, or just plain unfair. They are still gods, though — greater in scope than we are, mightier in Their understanding and wisdom, and (for all intents and purposes) immortal. It can be difficult to grasp that these humanlike qualities, far from ruining the majesty of our deities, are what make the entirety so magnificent — the way an imperfect diamond might dazzle far more than one that’s perfect.
There are deities who would not appreciate the intimation that They have personal shortcomings, and it’s probably better not to bring up the subject unless your god(s) do first, depending on who They are and what kind of relationship you’ve got with Them. That isn’t to say, however, that the gods don’t ever acknowledge or admit to having those qualities. If you are someone like myself who seeks to know and understand your deity in all of His or Her blazing depth and breadth and glorious complexity, you might one day realize (or have already realized) something surprising about your deity — something that seems so incredibly personal and private that it might shock you to know about it. You may even believe that the “fatal flaw” you’ve discovered makes your deity less divine.
