kind of annoyed at this take and it getting 3k. emily wilson isn't the modern translator of the odyssey because no one can be the modern translator of the odyssey. that's simply not how translation especially translation of ancient texts especially translation of long narrative texts in verse works. i think op is subconsciously adopting this as the progressive feminist viewpoint to have but i am certain that emily wilson too would object to this designation seeing as in interviews she comes off as a levelheaded and intelligent academic

i know i said i did not want to talk about the nolan odyssey but i do have one more nodyssey post in me. i actually think the idea of odysseus understanding his story as existing both in and out of a historic timeframe is a fun way to handle the liminality caused by the story being part of an extensive oral tradition. however having him say "our age of bronze is collapsing" is perhaps not the way i would have done that

#what on earth....#the “bronze age” is an archaeological construct #the “collapse” of the bronze age is a set of tenuous conclusions based on material culture & organic matter discoveries #situated chronologically in the aforementioned constructed time period #time periods are basically organizational tools and all conclusions are subject to debate. this is simply the nature of archaeology #odysseus or anybody of that time period would simply not conceptualize themselves as “living in the age of bronze”#i am.......#was zero research done? what?#*not the “nature of archaeology” but rather the commonly accepted standards of modern archaeology

people have talked about the relative non-presence of children in black sails but the ways in which they are present are also quite interesting... they represent the future for sure that's what children always represent but also from the "nothing left but the monsters in the stories they tell their children" thing to the little kids that gawk at flint when he's about to be executed to abigail to the kids reading the general history of the pyrates at the end they are very frequently in the position of passing down judgment. which is ever so slightly different from just like, the future will judge us, because it's not about what the children will do when they grow up to be adults. children are judges *in their capacity as children.* it's a war over the imagination of children. which of course makes perfect sense it's the prequel to a children's book.

i also have some level of detached interest in my own position here, one that is of course shared by many people. it's a strange yet common state of being, to feel so strongly and privately about a piece of art as widely read &/ received through adaptation as this one

#i feel strongly protective of victor which is an impulse i cherish but that i also recognize is #hmmm #difficult to translate into the shared world in a generative way??#like i don't want to speak about him with the intention of polemic #with the intention of proving xyz opinion that upsets me wrong #that is the easier route bc in such cases i have something that gives me an impetus or a jumping off point #but i want to become able to speak from my own thoughts regardless of if they have any value..
