There is great sadness in the barn today as Daisy was found passed away in her stall. It’s days like these that show you who is really in your corner and an extremely heart felt thank you to All those that have helped me all week, my lovely friends who brought heavy equipment out, And to Scott for taking time out his day to help load her onto the trailer. ❤️
Words can’t describe the love we all had for this sweet sweet girl, she gave the best snuggles and never failed to make me smile every day. She and Tango were always the first to say good morning with their nickers and there were plenty of winter days where the snow was just too deep or I was sick that I actually would not have made it to the barn while doing turn in if it weren’t for holding onto Daisy’s neck and she would find a way to get both of us safely where we belonged. We were always a bit of a clown show as she would get drug everywhere we went and she was always game and excited for the adventure, aslong as there were cookies involved. She was always full of pony sass and it was always funny to see her sassing the horses she lived with. Just a couple days ago she and Lark were obsessively grooming each other, Mostly instigated by her but Lark was always a good sport and would groom her back.
She grew from a scrawny terrified young pony that I honestly wasn’t sure she was going to make it through the first winter into the beautiful brave girl she was when she left us, way to soon I might add. As I sit here with tears in my eyes having no idea what to say after loosing not just mine but Tango’s best friend, emotional support, and truly I’m sure she was the love of his life, the best I have to say is Daisy May is extraordinarily loved and I am truthfully so lucky to have been able to have had such a special mare in my life as her. She will be missed everyday. 💕 My dear sweet girl 💕
Ok a fun quiz for everyone.
Do you have one vet (and or vet clinic) that you use for everything ? Or do you use a different vet for different treatments/services?
Probably helpful to include what you do with your horses/how many horses you have?
And probably what country you’re in is probably relevant too.
So I am in Australia
I have 3 vets
Scooby has his dental vet, and this vet also provides his ulcer medication.
Scooby also has his Hendra vaccination (this is yearly) /emergency/general issues vet
Mav has his own vet who is newer in the area and was available when my other two vets were not when he had a fever soon after he arrived. Also gelded him. And due to his general suspicion of strangers I would tend to continue to use her for him in general.
All work at different practices, the dental vet has one other vet working at their practice as well. Who did come out to do Scooby’s lameness exam/x rays a few years ago. Only because they have all the equipment on hand.
Naturally none of their regular vet treatments line up. I will probably get their teeth done at the same time though by the dental vet
At the moment I have just Amba and one vet that does everything. We’re in New York.
When we were in New Jersey I eventually brought a second vet in to do all diagnostic work on her because I felt that the main vet who did her shots and dental wasn’t showing enough concern about her weight loss and when she had mysterious neuro symptoms. Indy had that same vet and I saw her flip flop about whether Indy had arthritis and locking stifles when everyone else knew that she did so that was also a factor.
Before Amba my three previous horses all had one vet, and they were also all in New Jersey. However, a lot of people in NJ now have separate vets for chiropractic work because equine chiropractors must be certified vets, but not all vets offer the service. The one time I used another vet was because Snapshot had to have cataract surgery and go to a clinic.
Amba is just a pleasure horse for now; the previous three were a hunter/eq pony, a hunter/jumper/eventer, and a western pleasure/western trail horse that all showed before I went to college.
I live in Italy and have two horses who currently are mostly pasture decoration. They go on daily walks and are ridden on trails two or three times a week.
There is a veterinary clinic a 30 minute drive away from me, which is super practical. There are two equine vets who work there, one who mostly does home visits and the other one takes care of the horses that stay at the clinic. I'm really happy with both of them. I've had one of them pretty much the whole time since I've gotten Secolo 13 years ago. The other one is younger and has only been practicing for about 5 years, but she is very competent as well.
Then there's also an official veterinarian (I don't know if that's the right term in english, but it's a vet that is assigned to a certain region who has to make sure all farm animals are up to date with mandatory vaccines and tests and he's also responsible for welfare checks). I haven't had the best experiences with him in the past (he isn't the best at diagnostic work, unfortunately), but he still comes out for vaccines and to draw blood for tests because it's much cheaper this way and I trust him with that.
Im in Austria and have 1 horse, Bonnie. We did showed jumpers and dressage a lot a few years ago, in the last 3 years we mainly just do whatever seems fun for that day. So dressage, groundwork, sometimes jumping, trail rides, tried to teach her barrel racing once etc.
She has a dentist, who just does teeth. Then we have our regular vet who also does physio/chiro and nutrition. Both of them actually got recommended to me by my hoof guy. I really like all three of them, especially the hoof guy and my regular vet work together a lot, which is nice.
Then since Bonnie started having her autoimmune disease in the eye we also have an eye vet who works at the animal clinic in Vienna, so we go visit her every 6 months.
Other than the autoimmune disease Bonnie has never had anything in the 9 years I’ve had her so I didn’t have the need for a specialist or anything.
I’m in the US. Both my fiancé and I have horses. I have a primary vet who does maintenance, chiropractic, vaccines, initial diagnostics when there’s a problem, routine wellness check ups, and emergency response. I’ve used dental specialists before, but honestly the results have been mixed, so I’m probably going to use my regular vet for that this time.
Whenever an issue comes up that’s more complex or requires detailed diagnostics, I use the large animal hospital at Tufts. I’ve worked with horses long enough that I don’t like to guess what an underlying issue is or waste time trying various therapies without a definitive understanding of what we’re treating and why. I just send them up to Tufts for a bone scan and any other diagnostics they need so we can get answers quicker.
I use two clinics.
One for lameness because that's their speciality.
Then my local for just other bits and bobs
Australia, 2 oldies and 2 younger lads
I have 2 regulars, and a different one for ulcer scoping since the other two don't have one on hand
One is my instructor's wife, she does teeth, shots, minor things like swellings/scrapes or if I need medications ordered, bloods etc
Other is for more serious things like euthanasia, lameness, xrays or anything that needs a proper clinic exam
Australia, one retired and one dresssge.
I have one vet practice I go to but they are specialist equine Hospital so I just get whatever vet is free whenever I need one, I don't have a specific veterinarian that I use. But the clinic is only 10 mins from home so they're very convenient.
I have a few different vet clinics that I use. I like certain people for certain things.
I live in western Canada.
I have an 2007 OTTB jumper
A 2003 QH he was a ranch horse, trail horse, kids horse, a jack of all trades. until he was injured. Now he’s a rehabbing pasture puff.
Unknown age Welsh/QH she was a rescue and is young, we think around 5. She’s learning but mostly just a pasture puff as she has a wicked spin that can get pro rodeo cowboys off really fast.
And a 2004 Shetland? Maybe. Also a rescue but short. He’s 35” tall he has *founder and *cushings and was a companion for the QH. He’s a rehabbing paddock puff. And I just adore him.
I like the one practice for chiro and teeth floats as she does them by hand and she’s amazing. During the pandemic I couldn’t travel provinces to get to her and had the horses done by other people and I’m so excited for her to do them again.
My other clinic I use for everything else. They did the blown DDFT that I had last year with my QH and they do all my vaccines and stuff. The vets are awesome and take really good care of my crew.
Then I have a back up clinic. They do large and small animal and my cat goes there and I’ve used them for the occasional emergancy and second opinion and they are great. Just further away and don’t have the same radiology equipment as the previous I only mentioned vet. So I try to only use them for things that don’t involve alot of scans.
**The midget had founded and cushings already when I bought him. It hasn’t been treated so I wasn’t told about it until I started investigating after I got him home and started treatment as well. Including pills, cavallo boots, special shoeing, feed, and pen situation.
After an incredibly long journey and still longer to come I got to have my first ride on lark in a year.
He was perfect. We went through my friends hay field and he never once put a foot out of place. For a horse that’s had a year off that’s a true unicorn.
For a while there I thought I’d never be able to ride him again after his Deep Digital Flexor Tendon tear so we are over the moon with him.
The rare warm fall day. The flies are still horrible though so the ponies get fly masks
Also lark gets to go out with his friends again!
Oops. I meant #38 did it come true. Hahaha
38: My childhood career choice
I really wanted to be a vet, But after talking to some vets over the years I decided against it. I’m currently going after a nursing career.
6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 16, 39-and did it come true?, 44. :)
6: Age you get mistaken for
Oh I get mistaken for a couple ages mostly that I’m older than I am.
7: Have tattoos?
I do on my right wrist
8: Want any tattoos?
I do. I want something with my Off the Track Thoroughbreds tattoo number.
10: Want any piercings?
I was half considering nipple piercings but probably never going to happen lol
11: Best friend?
She lives in Utah and deleted her Tumblr so I can’t tag her. However, we are going on over a decade of friendship.
16: I’ll love you if…
Lol buy me ice cream and give me snuggles.
39: My favorite ice cream flavor
(I want to answer this lol) Mint Chocolate chip. But truthfully the Mint Oreo Blizzard from DQ is my all-time most favorite treat
44: A random fact about anything
Umm.. I don’t really know anything interesting… Horses do lay down to sleep?
Thank you!! Thank you!! This totally made my day 110% better!!
Teddy Bear adventures
In October he couldn’t jump out of trailers. His feet hurt too much. And while they still have a long ways to go he is doing so much better.
His blood sugar levels October 2020 were at a 30 when they are supposed to be between 1-10 and as of last week May 2021 they were at a 3!!
Life with a cushings/founder case
Adventures with Teddy Bear. How exciting it is that he is finally feeling well enough to jump into the trailer!! I’m so proud of him!
Teddy bear feeling good enough to go for a walk with my friend and her horse. We have the best Ferrier ever! Putting shoes on the little man.
My idiot cat challenging the Fox to a fight. Cat came in unharmed. He noticed the human standing there and came to them (my house mate)
The screaming is mostly coming from the Fox.
The ponies will appreciate being fed for another month while they anxiously await the arrival of green grass
Why I shouldn’t own a horse trailer and a cheque book. Meet Tiger.
14 year old AQHA
I’m just putting some more spring miles on him as he had most of the winter off then he’ll go to a child in my family.
Merry Christmas from our herd to yours.
Me 🤷🏻♀️
Because I’m mean and he was sweating at night and cold in the day from his cushings soo I took away all his hair. Poor teddy.
Because I’m slightly obsessed with this toque
