Romanians love calculating things in euro, despite the fact that we are not part of the euro zone yet. Our national currency is LEI, which is Romanian for LIONS (1€ is around 4.4 lei), however these lions are far from being the kings of the Romanian jungle. Because everything exceeding 1000 lei is automatically transformed by Romanians in euro. Take the average Romanian family for instance. They’re buying tomatoes for 3 lei a kilo, having a 1 000€ monthly income (providing both grown-ups are working). They fuel up their 2 000€ second hand car with 4.5 lei gas. They live in a 35 000€ apartment with monthly installments of 250€ and have a 40 lei coffee table from Ikea. They have 300€ smartphones and eat a 1 leu pretzel (covrig) as a street snack. They play the 5 lei lottery hoping for the 500 000€ prize. And if all goes well, they grab 19.99 lei bathing suits from h&m and go for an all-inclusive 400€ holiday in Turkey. You’d think we’d be some sort of math geniuses to calculate everything in two currencies. But here’s how our math works: up to 1000 lei we’re talking lei. Above that we’re doing math with 250€ or more. I’m not quite sure if Romanians know how much 376 467 lei (random big amount of lei) is really worth, without transforming it in euro.
So take a 4 lei notebook and a 2 lei pencil or simply open up that calculator app on your 300€ smartphone to avoid getting into a double-trouble currency issue. And stay tuned to find out how you can “Become a Romanian millionaire without getting any richer”.
