Carmen listened. Ethan was talking fast and pushing topics together… He was making random small talk that was kind of all over the place. She could tell he was nervous about something. That doesn’t mean he knew about New York, does it? He couldn’t right? Or could he? So many thoughts were swirling as her mind was going a mile a minute wondering how much or little he knew or was piecing together with his beautiful mind. Taking a deep breath in and out, that might have half passed as a yawn or just as a deep breath, she was able to recenter on him.
She could answer about how New York traffic is but she doubted he really wanted to know, or already didn’t have a firm understanding of the way New Yorker’s drive. Even though she thought that she wasn’t going to not answer the questions about her. Ethan always really cared about her. “The ride was great, I booked a sleeper car. So, umm yeah, even though I was up at 6 am,” she giggled at how well he did know her, “I had a nice four and a half hour nap on the way home.”
She nodded affirming that she would love some help with her bags. “I’m available tonight if you want to get together with Mom and Dad? It would be, “she hesitated just so slightly, “nice to see them.” And to move past the hesitation, “And it’s been forever since we’ve all been together for a family dinner.” As they were carrying bags upstairs she looked over her brother’s face. “You’re looking really good lately. And I’m glad you shaved,” she teased softly.
“A family dinner would be good,” Ethan affirmed as he reached down to pick up Carmen’s bags and heave them onto his shoulders. “Mom and Dad are both really excited, so don’t be surprised if you come over and find that they’ve made enough food to feed the entire town.” He wasn’t privy to the ins and outs of Carmen’s relationship with their parents, but he suspected that Ethan Sr. and Rebecca had felt a bit of a distance in their relationship with their daughter too. It would certainly explain their unabashed excitement about her return home.
“Thanks,” Ethan said, in reply to his sister’s compliment. He paused to stroke his jaw, smoother now without the old stubble. After graduating from college, he’d let it grow out, partly because he thought it made him look older, partly because Mei An liked it better that way, and partly because he was always just too exhausted to do anything about it. When he returned to Hickory Creek, he decided to shave it off, after moping about for a week or two, of course. It was a part of his journey in trying to turn over a new leaf and give his life another go.
“You know, ten years ago I never would’ve thought that I’d be 24 and living in the apartment above Mom and Dad’s garage while you would be the one with your own place.” Ethan said with a half-smile as he looked around Carmen’s new home. “I guess life can just take you by surprise sometimes.”
