Thomas was staring at him, an expression of pure shock on his face, jaw open in a disbelieving expression.

“Aldo,” he squeaked. “What… I… You …”

He fell silent, searching for his words. If the situation had been different, Aldo would have been amused, and even a little proud of himself. Making Thomas, the diplomatic and eloquent soul, speechless was a feat very few could achieve, yet Aldo did it with only a few words.

“Easy there, Tom,” he said, trying to soothe him. He didn’t dare come nearer to comfort him further, fearing his touch would only spook Thomas even more. “Deep breath.”

Thomas only shook his head, looking at him, eyes wide and searching, looking for any sign confirming the truth of his words.

“You are in love?” Thomas said, repeating his friend’s words from earlier.

It took Aldo all the strength within him to stay still and calm. It was too late to go back now, he might as well continue. Keep diving your own grave, old man…

“I am,” he nodded. His voice didn’t quiver, much to his relief.

He wished marriage wasn’t such a taboo for priests, but he knew one lifetime wouldn’t be enough to change the Church’s stance on celibacy and homosexuality. He could start clearing the path, start laying the first stones, but he knew that if such a revolution was possible, it would be far after him.

Still, he often daydreamed, wondering what their wedding would be like. His thoughts always came back to how good Thomas would look in white. Ironically, when he had this kind of thought, he was mostly picturing Thomas in the papal attire. He had voted for him over and over again during the conclave without having the chance to see his beloved wearing the white cassock. He never thought of it as wedding attire until recently.

Maybe Thomas could wear the red and gold chasuble he was wearing when delivering his homily during the conclave. Vincent had thought him to be quite handsome in it and he confessed it wasn’t only for his beautiful homily that Vincent couldn’t take his eyes away from him that day. Thomas could wear a suit, or maybe a cassock. He would look good in any attire, but Vincent loved him best in his cassock. Maybe he could wear a white one, with a silky, light and longer fabric. White would suit him. He would look good, radiant.

Vincent always rejected the finer things his position afforded him. He always preferred a simple white cassock to the elaborate papal attire. However, Vincent often found himself wanting to lavish Thomas with fine things, with high quality clothing made of silk and lace. Something pleasant to the touch and to the eyes. Something Vincent could admire at day, during their wedding, and to take off at night.
