I feel like Ares and Aphrodite have the relationship that half the internet thinks Hades and Persephone have.

One of these couples is Hades and Persephone and the other is Ares and Aphrodite, take a wild guess.

So...

Crap like Lore Olympus,the Hades game or even God of War (maybe especially God of War) and BookTok) have been heavily romanticizing Hades and Persephone for years as a Dark Lord x Lady Sunshine dynamic. But like no?????? In actual classical mythology, their story begins when Hades wants a wife, sees little Persephone and likes, so who does he ask? Persephone herself? fck no. Persephone's mom who raises her and protects her? fck no. He asks Zeus. An Zeus knows Demeter will never allow it so he makes up a plan with Hades so he kidnap the girl.

Now, this is sadly and unfortunately quite normal for the context. But that is exactlyy point, Hades and Persephone are not a love story and they are not subversive.

If you're looking for ACTUAL mutual adoration, intense passion, a terrifying warrior god who becomes completely soft for his partner, that's Ares and Aphrodite.

Ares is usually depicted as a brutal and quite disliked god. Zeus even tells Ares how much he hates him. Yet, when he's with Aphrodite, he stops being a war machine to turm into purring kitty. He listens to her, he respects her desires, and does bends to her will (unlike Hades for Persephone), and THIS is that classic "he hates everyone except her" trope that these people seem to like so much.

Also, unlike Aphrodite’s arranged marriage to Hephaestus, her connection with Ares was entirely chosen AND consensual, which IS a subversion of typical Greek Deity Romance™. Even after they get caught in Hephaestus's net and humiliated, neither of them repented once. They literally jumped right back to each other.

I've seen people argue that they are about lust not love (which is not a difference the Greek made, those were the Romans, and much later). But even that is not true, as Ares wasn't just in it for the physical passion, instead he was fiercely protective of her and their children (and his own children for that matter):

In the Iliad, when Aphrodite is wounded on the battlefield, Ares immediately lends her his war chariot so she can escape to Mount Olympus, the he comforts her.

And we all know what happened when Poseidon’s son assaulted his daughter, Alcippe, who by some accounts was also Aphrodite’s daughter.

And even in context, the Greeks were all about metaphors: Death steals away Life, but Life fights and resurges every time. Life DOES NOT go willingly with Death, she doesn't live him.

Meanwhile, Hatred and Love and the two sides of the coin of Passion. Alone, lust and war can destroy the world but together they create balance. Who are the five god children of Ares and Aphrodite? the two minor gods of war Phobos and Deimos, the two gods of love Himeros/Eros and Anteros, AND the literal goddess of harmony, Harmonia.

So I think a lot of people in the internet are giving Hades the devoted husband who burns the world for her role, but Hades was just another god fulfilling a quite bureaucratic job. Yes he minded his business, but that doesn't mean he and Persephone were the Romeo and Juliet of the Greek Pantheon. She was a bride he got via Zeus's arrangement.

If one wants a lover who defies the system, his family, gets humiliated for you, fights your battles, and softens ONLY in your presence, well then that's Ares.

I just watched Obsession with my man because I read everywhere online that every girl should do that and if he empathizes with Bear, run. Never in one million years would I have imagined that I would be the one leaving the movies defending Bear.

From my perspective, I was watching a guy with terrible friends (Ian), lonely and who just lost his one companion (Sandy), who wanted to make a sweet and romantic love confession but got bad advise. Then, he didn't have the courage to confess his feelings and, in a moment of sadness, he made an innocent wish with a toy he NEVER thought would work. But then it works and he's happy, weirded out but happy, until it becomes clear something is wrong and he tries to be fix it but fails and it was nobody's fault.

If that sounds stupid, it's because it fucking is.

My male partner, on the other hand, left the theatre utterly disgusted with Bear and calling him all kinds of names. I told him I didn't see anything wrong in his behaviour and he proceeded to tell me every single thing he perceived as wrong:

He goes to the store to buy Nikki and crystal necklace but the second he sees the One Willow Wish, he gets that one. For Nikki? Maybe, but who uses it? Himself. He goes to get something for her (likely in hopes that it will get him something in return) but ends up getting something else for himself.

Sandy is dead and he's super sad about it, like he cries his soul out. Then he stalks Nikki. After that, he literally forgets about his dead cat when Nikki kisses him.

We see him smile lovestruck at her when she is kind and sweet to the homeless man. He cites the moments she showed him sympathy when saying why he loves her. He does want to share a life with her, he wants that kindness and sweetness for himself.

After Nikki is turned into Wish!Nikki, we don't see her one be her real self. She wears tighter clothing and behaves like a child, but Bear seems perfectly content with that.

Initially, Bear is okay with having someone looking like Nikki as his girlfriend. Then, it isn't enough for to just look like Nikki. Now, he needs her to have her personality too but loving him. He does want Nikki, but he doesn't love her — he needs her to want him.

When Nikki kisses him and then screams and jumps away scared, he opens his hands and says "you kissed me!" "are you okay? you scared me, I felt like I was doing something bad". His concern is himself, not her.

After she gets weird and violent, he calls to modify the wish, not cancel it. He hears her wailing on the phone and hangs up scared, which is understandable at the moment, but then makes no effort to help her or learn anything else.

He doesn't even look at Sarah until Nikki has become too much, and he would have most likely cheated on her if she hadn't appeared and killed their friend.

When Nikki speaks and begs him to kill her and he says what's so bad about being with me? And he just leaves. But then he decides to end it by killing only himself, removing his own ass from the problem and leaving her to deal with everything else alone.

And I just can't believe I didn't see it myself.

What does that even say about me as a woman?

It’s disturbing how people always want to bring up Dany’s dead male ancestors, but never her female ancestors. They want her to be the scapegoat for the actions of long dead men whom she’s never met, but ignore the enduring tradition of suffering and suppressed Targaryen women, that she is actively subverting…almost all Targaryen women after the conqueror’s wives (and we can argue all day about how much power or autonomy even they had, tbh) were passed over in some way or another in favor of a man, many losing their lives in the process, or enduring sexual violence, forced birth, unimaginable horrors, and in Rhaenyra’s case a bloody, terrible war. All for the crime of being born women. Daenerys is not the sacrificial lamb that all of her male ancestors’ sins are transubstantiated onto, that is such a tired, lazy, and misogynistic way to look at her story…she is the breaker of generational chains for her female ancestors. She is the star after the tower. The empress of the dawn. She is hope and healing, not destruction and rage. Dragons plant no trees, true, but Dany does.

Can you explain why athena is problematic?? Not trying to say she isn't, but I really don't know as much about her to judge that

Athena is ‘problematic’, like all the other Greek gods. My problem is with people pretending like she’s perfect and not at all with an ambiguous side. Worse, they call her a feminist, when in actuality she’s more likely to opress girls to prove that she-is-not-like-other-girls.

First of all, I really really dislike her in the pre-trojan war events. Like I don’t get why she had to be in the beauty contest at all. Hera and Aphrodite, I can understand. But Athena is the goddess of wisdom, not beauty. I Just Don’t Understand! And she acts like a bully to Ares. Making fun of him when his son dies, helping Diomedes attack Ares and make Ares look like a loser in front of all the gods. Gosh, I hate that she die that!!

What she did to the gorgons - I usually go with the version where Medusa isn’t raped and is cursed for making out in Athena’s temple, which I’m not gonna complain about. But, it’s said that, to celebrate the death of gorgons, she created the aulos whose sound resembled their cries…..which is really cold. And there’s this this thing with Arachne. Like I get it, it was a punishment for hubris. I just don’t get how people call her feminist when she’s done all these.

Athena has both generous and cruel things. I wish more people accepted that part of hers too, instead of denying it and picturing her as a perfect goddess, which in my case, led to more disappointment when I came to know about her cruelty.
