“What’s the rush?”
“Well I really should be getting back to my shop. I have a lot of paperwork to finish before the weekend.”
“Well, I believe if I wear to actually be on a football field, it be more as like, a water boy. Or someone who gets towels for the players or something of that nature.” Taking his cup and the sugar bowl from the tray, Hugh took a small sip before dropping more cubes into the tea. “I think I shall stick to sports I can actually do.” He said with a nod. Thinking for a moment Hugh ended up just shaking his head. “Actually, I don’t think I belong in any sort of sport.”
“Perhaps you could be an announcer,” Romilly commented pouring tea into her cup and stirring in her two sugar cubes. She made a mental note when he added more sugar to his tea to put in more next time. She was getting closer to using the proper amount though. She took a sip of her tea satisfied with the amount of sugar and took a biscuit from the tray. “I’m sure you would add some very colorful commentary, and you’re sure to be impartial.” She smiled poking fun at his confusion about the teams earlier. “Oh did I tell you that we may have a new employee at the shop?”
“Oh me? Tall gangly thing with terrible balance playing in a football game. I would last two minutes.” Sitting down at her kitchen table, Hugh crossed his legs. “I think I’ll be content with simply watching the game, even if I don’t quite know what’s going on.”
Until he mentioned it Romilly hadn’t actually pictured Hugh playing football, but thinking about it so couldn't help picturing a clumsy Giraffe scrambling across a football field and trying kick a ball into a goal. She started laughing slightly at the image as the kettle began the chirping sound telling her it was about to come to a boil. She went over to her cabinets pulling out a tea tray, and a tea pot. From another an assortment of biscuits and jaffa cakes. Setting everything on the tray and transferring the now boiling water into the tea pot and adding the tea bags. She even added aother tray of sugar in case she didnt add enough to Hughs cup. She carefully carried the tray over to the dining area and placed it on the table. “Perhaps you’re right,” She said smiling handing Hugh his cup, “As I said I’m not that great at football, you learning from me might end in disaster for both of us.”
“Sorry, again. Erm, I’m Gina. I’m not normally known to be scary.”
Roe smiled, “No, I’m sure youre not.” she held out her hand, to shake her hand, “I’m Roe.”

“Is she enjoying her new found privacy? I hope so.”

The store was empty and she had finished the paperwork for her new employee when she got a notification on her phone that she had a new email. She pulled one of the tablets from under the counter and sat down behind the register. Once she opened her inbox, there was a single new email from an address she didn't recognize with no subject line. Thinking it was perhaps someone interested in selling her an antique she didn't think twice before opening the email. In the email there was nothing but a link. This caused a moment of hesitation. She checked if her virus software was still operational before tapping the link.
Romilly nearly dropped the tablet when she was were the link had taken her. She bit her lip and tried to take deep breaths. Who was this person, and how did they know? Looking around the shop again just to make sure again that no customer was there, she pulled all of the blinds shut in the shop windows and changed the open sign to closed locking the door as well. Her breath started coming out in more rapid gasps and she she began stumbling through the shop until she found a chair near the back of the store hidden behind a self and a curio cabinet.
A scream ached to escape her throat but she stifled it the best she could. She had worked so long and so hard to try and forget, to try and move on only to have it brought up by a stranger on the internet. She finally broke into sobs trying in vain to muffle the sound in her sleeve.
Beth smirked at the girl’s reaction, shrugging her shoulders. “You don’t have to, I’m simply amusing myself.”
This confused Romilly even more, honestly she hadn’t encountered anyone like this before. Perhaps she was joking, but the look on her face didn't seem to say ‘I’m just messing around.’ it seemed to say ‘I will eat you alive.’ “Umm, okay well I should really get going,” Romilly said gathering the things on her table.
Miles kept the smile upon his face, shaking her hand as well. “The pleasure is all mine, Roe.” He had paused a second before going for the short form of her name that she had offered. His smile grew wider when she told him he had the job. “Seriously? Thank you so much. You honestly made my day.” It was written all over his face how glad he was about the news. “Do you want me to help you out for the rest of the day? We could go for a drink after work and celebrate my hiring.” He bit his lip, yet he kept smiling.
Seeing how happy the news of the job made him brought a smile to her face. “I wouldn't mind help for the rest of the day, the assistant manager Hugh has the day off, but we should probably fill out your paperwork and payment information.” When he mentioned drinks she crossed her arms and gave him an apologetic smile, “I don’t mind celebrating but I don’t really drink.”
Miles gave a nod before taking the grandfather clock again, following her to the back of the store. Looking at everything she pointed and listened closely. “The register is for smaller purchases or cash purchases, larger ones via tablets with card readers attached and the black leather chair is not for sale. I think I can keep that in mind.” He said with a nod and smiled. “You know what I just realized? I didn’t even introduce myself properly. If you think about hiring me it would be good you know my name.” Miles chuckled softly at how absentminded he was this day. “Sorry. I’m Miles Pierce.” He set down the clock and extened his hand.
Romilly nodded as he repeated the information she had told him. When he pointed out that they hadn't been introduced yet Romilly laughed, “That’s true, I would definitely need to have a name.” Romilly took his hand and shook it, “It’s nice to meet you Miles, my name is Romilly Merren, but you can call me Roe if you wish.” She released his hand and smiled. “And there’s not really a need to worry about if you get hired, we’ve been short handed for the last month and a half, two of my employees left town to go to uni during the summer. We’ve already established you can handle heavy lifting, and as long as you can work what is basically a calculator, you’re already set.”
“Well, I suppose. But, I feel like I could have learned a lot more about it from reading a book, or actually playing the game.” Hugh pointed out. At the offer of tea, the man perked up. “Oh that does sound rather lovely.”
Romilly had already taken two mismatched cups down from her cabinet by the time he had agreed to the tea. Her cabinet was filled with lonely mismatched antique cups whose sets had been lost to the ages. She filled the kettle and set it on the stove turning the burner on. While the water to heated up Romilly put two cubes of sugar in her tea cup and a significant amount more into Hugh’s. “Would you like to play in a football game?” She asked from the kitchen, “I’m not very good but I probably could help you learn the rules that way, better than I could explain them.”
“All right, then I’ll leave it there. But I honestly wouldn’t mind to take it in the back of the store. It would be done and you didn’t have to do it later.” Miles said, meaning each word of it. It wasn’t a problem for him if she wanted the grandfather clock in the back of the store, besides he believed it would give him extra points to get a job there. After all he needed one badly.
Romilly bit her lip and then nodded, “I suppose you’ll have to learn your way around the store eventually. If you really don’t mind taking it back, then follow me.” She said as she began walking toward the back of the store facing the man as she walked. “Well this is my store, the register is over there,” she pointed to the right side of the store where a register sat in front of a window covered by selves of antique glass bottles, “Though the register is only used on smaller item purchases, or cash purchases, for larger pieces we use tablets with Card readers attached.” Pointing near the center of the store to a leather chair, “That leather chair is near the center of the store is NOT for sale no matter how much anyone offers, if anyone asks its on reserve. That’s the assistant managers favorite chair and he doesn’t know I won’t let anyone buy it.”
“Oh, of course.” Miles said, looking at the grandfather clock before stepping next to it and tilting it enough to get it through the door. “I’ve no problem with heavy lifting.” It was one of the perks of not being human. Once the grandfather clock was inside the shop he looked at her. “Where do you want me to put the clock?”
“Thank you.” She said smiling widely and closing the shop door behind the two of them. “For now we can just put it by the cash register. I would normally put it in the back of the store, but I could always do that later. I figured you would want a job before I made you do too much manual labor.”
Miles rubbed a hand over his head, sighing since finding a job was way harder than he had hoped. Looking up when he heard a female voice saying something about ‘open positions’. For a second he wasn’t sure if she was talking to him but as he saw she was looking at him he gave a soft smile, raising from his place on the bench. “Really? Well, I’m fine with anything you have to offer. I’m really not picky.”
Romilly smiled and nodded her head towards the clock in front of the doorway. “If you help me get this grandfather clock inside the shop I can start interviewing you faster.” The grandfather clock needed to be tilted to get through the doorway, a job that Romilly didn’t feel comfortable doing on her own. “Prior warning some heavy lifting will most likely be a part of all of the positions.”
Nee sighed, and tried flashing a smile. “I’m fine– really, really bad with directions, but, fine. Sometimes I just go out for something, forget about it, and… wander? Are you alright– I’m really sorry, I kind of end up running into people like this too often.”
Romilly nodded as he spoke, she didn't relate to his habbit of wandering off but she understood it. “I’m fine, honestly, I just startle easily. Did you need help finding some place, nearby or were you just wandering this time?”
“Yeah, but I spent this whole time thinking that I was cheering for the right team, only find it was the wrong one the whole time.” Sitting back in his seat, the man frowned. “Frankly, I find this whole experience wasted.”
She took his hand in hers and patted it lightly, “I wouldn't say it was a waste, we had fun didn’t we? You’ve learned a bit about football as well. Who knows, mybe next time you’ll root for the right team and they’ll win.” Romilly clicked off the television and stood up “Would you like a cup of tea?”
Miles was wandering down the street, pursing his lips as he sank down on a bench he came along. Lost in his thoughts he was mumbling to himself, not considering someone might hear him. “How’s it possible that no one is looking for an employee?”
Romilly was pulling a large antique grandfather clock she had just purchased from a seller to put in her shop. She was struggling to get it through the door as it was quite a bit taller than her door frame she stood there trying to figure out how to get it through the door when she overheard the man on the bench in front of the shop next door. “I wouldn't say that no one is hiring.” She smiled. “I have a few positions open,”

“ Oh, well. I don’t know about that… It was already broken when I got here.” Nate lied.” I have no idea what might have happened, maybe the culprit broke it and ran away. Yeah that sounds about right.”
Hearing the sound of something fall to the floor Romilly left the register waving he other employee to take over. She went over to the area of her store the sound came from, and frowned at the broken porcelain canary on the floor. “Oh the poor thing,” She said as she knelt down looking up at the man standing near it. “You sure you didn't break it?” Carefully she started picking up the broken pieces of porcelain off the floor, “I wont charge you its just, you’re the only one in the store right now besides my employee...”
