I have a lot of houseplants that I treat like my children so I will probably post about them a lot

I saw a buddhas hand lemon in irl life for the first time ever it genuinely felt like i was meeting a celebrity.

It was 42°C that day which apparently caused my phone camera to have to a hazy dreamy aura to it for some reason???

With heirloom seed swaps, gardeners grow community – and biodiversity

In a growing movement, everyday individuals are saving and swapping seeds, an effort that can help boost biodiversity and food security.

Seed enthusiasts can be motivated by food independence or climate change resilience or just the desire to grow – and taste – a really great watermelon. But what ties them together, says Bevin Cohen, a leader in the heirloom seed movement who organized the expo’s seed swap, is the joy of joining with others to grow a better future.

And heritage seeds are particularly valuable for biodiversity, seed experts say. These types of seeds are naturally pollinated and have been passed down from one generation to the next, traced back for at least 50 years.

Rebecca Newburn founded the Seed Library Network to help consolidate these efforts, with seed packets available everywhere from universities to neighborhood Little Free Library boxes. The interest, she says, has been “growing and growing” since she developed the idea in the late 2000s. Last year, more than 2,200 people from 35 countries registered for the online Seed Library Network summit.

“People come to seeds from different places and connect to them in different ways,” Ms. Newburn says.

Some growers are worried about climate change, she says, and want to test out varieties that might fare better in a hotter, drier, or wetter environment. Others worry about corporations controlling so much of the food supply.

Finally have a room :) couch surfing for 5 months was not the most enjoyable but what can you do ig. My babies r loving the west facing window even if they look very lonely right now :/ that will be fixed soon hopefully! Might treat myself to some new plants as a reward for pushing through the worst winter of my life

My coworker n i have been bonding over gardening a lot (he has an allotment he basically lives off during the summer #jealous) and he came into work yesterday and gave me a jar homemade vegan pesto with some wild garlic he foraged i nearly cried

My lemonlings are growing very well, I'm having way more success with these guys than the last time (:/) considering these r not even 2 months old and already bigger than they were at 5 months.

Gotta divide them into separate pots pretty pronto before they all strangle each other or something lol

I realized I haven’t posted a fig update in awhile!

5/7 cuttings rooted and are doing fantastic. Unsure why the other two didn’t take, but I’m not complaining. I’ll probably move the two I’m keeping to bigger pots once I’m a little more recovered and it’s not snowing. One has already gone to my mother and I’ll be sharing the rest with gardener friends.

Noticed a bit of mold growth on cosmo & wanda so I tried my best to disinfect them & planted them in disinfected soil too. But I had to leave them at my parents' house while i house hunt and I am so worried about them

Unfortunately we lost cosmo to the mold >_<

My parents did their best to keep them clean and have been very patiently giving me updates on wanda's wellbeing. She's already got too much root for the nursery pot so I gotta sort that soon. Maybe some grief counselling too

I'm going through what's easily the worst 2 months of my life but luckily I got my conkers from my ex partners fridge last week and I have 2 successes out of 3

!!!!

This is all I have now and I will cherish them

I love when people ask "how did you learn this skill?" I just started, there's no secret. that's it. a vast majority of the time the only thing holding you back is your trepidation to start.

same. people say "oh i dont have a green thumb!" and i always answer "neither do i. i just try."

the responses i get from that have been a range from curiosity to sudden self-confidence to smile-and-walk-away-with-no-further-words to "well guess i'm not as good as you" hate.

why with hate? just... try.

I always tell newbies a few things:

successful gardeners are stubborn. this is the #1 and most important characteristic.

successful gardeners learn to be observant - of their plants, the sun, the weather, the rain, the humidity, the soil, etc. Taking lots of pictures and notes can help.

successful gardeners have killed a lot of plants - they just get new ones! but the ones they've killed they've tried to learn from
