A shadow crossed her face. "Oh, that ain't so," she said. "Your father got a han'bill on yella paper, tellin' how they need folks to work. They wouldn't go to that trouble if they wasn't plenty work. Costs 'em good money to get them han'bills out. What'd they want ta lie for, an' costin' 'em money to lie?"

Tom shook his head. "I don't know, Ma. It's kinda hard to think why they done it."

I accidentally grew some cucumbers.

I MEANT to plant a butternut squash, realizing only after it was in the ground that the tag said cucumber. I actually hate cucumbers.

But M. likes them, so I just kept tending and training it alongside the pumpkins.

I saw plenty of little nubbins and flowers, but nothing that really looked like a cucumber.

I was out in the garden just now, watering everything before we go away, and saw what looked like a half-grown cucumber poking out from the leaves. So I thought, hm! I wonder if there are any others.

And there were these four sumbitches. M. was so surprised and delighted.

Apparently, they're pickling cucumbers! I hate cucumbers but I will put a hurting on a pickle.

So! Last minute trip to the market for some spices I didn't already have, and I'm currently prepping two batches of refrigerator pickles, which should be ready to eat by the time we get back from our trip.

The chocolate-cherry pie was amazeballs, by the way. 10/10, would smash into my face again.

I love getting a new flush of roses every month ❤️ eventually this whole area will be nothing but flowers

Bonjour tout le monde regarde mes fleurs que j'ai poussé dans ma potager. Ils sont tellement beaux, non? Les deux sont espèces zinnia. Je ne peux pas attendre quand toute ma potager c'est pousser.

Cosmic Crisp

(FULL DISCLOSURE: I am partial to the fine apple growers of Washington State and thus it pains me to write this unbiased review.)

The Cosmic Crisp apple is the most over-hyped, disappointing piece of fruit since the atrocious Cotton Candy Grape was crammed down our throats by what I assume were deranged clown farmers. A rock-hard, tasteless, skee ball - this cross between a Honeycrisp and Enterprise tastes like the memory of a distant cider squeezed out of an uncooked potato. An apple that was 20 years in the making, backed by a marketing budget that clocked in at $10 million, this was supposed to be Appleandia’s next big thing. Instead it is just another thick-skinned choke fruit that belongs in a horse bucket.

Made some lovely thai basil chicken for dinner while I watch the world cup.

I used my own thai basil, I wish it was later in the season so I could use my own peppers too!
