I case you missed it, I injured myself in a freak accident about 6 weeks ago. I've started a GOFUNDME that you can visit for more info, and to help me out as I recover. Thanks!
Here is my initial announcement, followed by a 6 week update of how I'm doing...
I injured myself in a freak accident a few weeks ago, and will be on crutches and out of commission for a while. I’ve started a gofundme to help cover bills and unexpected expenses for myself and my partner @ancientpocket who has been caring for me full time. ~ ~
On May 30, I accidentally knocked over a large, heavy mirror in my apartment. It hit me as it fell & shattered, cutting a chunk out of my right calf, and rupturing my Achilles. I bled heavily, and might not be writing this if the ambulance hadn’t arrived so quickly.
I’ve been resting & recovering since then. The two dozen staples have mostly been removed, but I’m still not sure how long my complete recovery will take, or if my Achilles will require further surgery.
I’m asking for donations to help cover a variety of unexpected expenses, as well as to pay bills, as I’m unable to work on new projects. As an independent artist, my practice requires constant attention to make ends meet, and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to fully return to my work.
I’ve been staying with my partner Vanessa Santos & her kids, who’ve been caring for me. Some of the funds raised will also be used to help Vanessa, as she’s also had to take time away from her work & practice to care for me.
I’ve already received some contributions from friends, and am humbled & thankful for all of the kind words and assistance.
This accident was frightening & traumatic in ways I don’t yet completely understand. It will have lasting effects, yet I also see it as the opening of a new chapter for me. I look forward to my full recovery, and to returning to my work as an artist. I’m not done yet, and hope to create comics and drawings for many years to come!
It’s been six weeks since my accident with the broken mirror, and I wanted to let everyone know how I’ve been doing.
I’m relieved to report that I won’t be needing further surgery on my Achilles! This is great news, I wasn’t looking forward to going through that. This injury has been painful enough as it is.
The wound where they stapled my flesh back together has been doing great, and is mostly healed.
But, it’s still going to be a long, slow process for my leg & Achilles to completely heal. I’ll be wearing the compression boot & walking on crutches for another month, at least. It could still be a while until I’m up walking around again, driving, etc.
I’m amazed, and so thankful for everything I’ve raised with this fundraiser so far, but it’s still going to be a while until I’m back to normal. I’d like to continue to accept donations until I reach my goal…
I’m so very very thankful to everyone who’s helped me financially. I know the majority of you, and it’s been so touching to see all of your names popping up on the list! I haven’t seen many of you in quite a while. It’s been quite emotional to feel all of your well wishes and support. To my family, my friends, my fans, and to all of my fellow cartoonists - thank you thank you thank you!
I of course also want to thank my partner Vanessa & her kids for having me in their home for many weeks. Extra thanks to Vanessa, as well as Sam & Tim & Jordan & Rebbeca for rides & doctor visits, sandwiches, advice & help with so many other things…
As a small token of gratitude, I’m going to make something, a special zine for everyone who’s contributed. More on that soon!
