First Freeze.
The ladies did well their first night in some freezing temps. I made sure to add some extra hay to the hen house, which they are now sleeping in every night. We have been letting them free range for intervals during the day. They are eating a lot more food these days too.
Fowl Pox
My ladies have a mild case of fowl pox. They are getting better and they never really developed those nasty pus warts, just black scabs on their comb and top of beak. They are doing really well though. It has been about 1 week and Tomahto is already over the infection. The rest are on their way. They get it from Mosquito bites. Where we live in Austin, we have a lot of mosquitoes. We have done a good job planting plants that deter the mosquitoes. I am keeping their water and coop super clean to help speed up their recovery. Poor babies! :(
Chicks Day 26
Chicks Day 20
Second night outside. Just as the night before they were quite vocal right when the sun went down and they were all pushing their way past each other to get near their coop door. I tried a LED clip light instead of the lamp, they didn't care for it at first, but started to calm down after a while and all fell asleep in a little chicken pile after a while. Sweet little things!
Chicks Day 19
The ladies spent their first night outside in the coop last night. It was rough. They talked all night. I finally brought the lamp we had inside next to their crate out and turned that on for them. The calmed down after that. I put up a make shift roost for them. The other one we had put up they just were not using, so I have to redesign that. Happy little ladies this morning! I must admit I was freaking out a little bit leaving them outside for the first night. I thought about pitching a tent so that I could make sure they were okay. Ting is huge, Precious lily White seems to be the runt of the group. Tomahto has all the personality though, she is very curious and loves to peck at my hands, which I find pretty entertaining.
Ladies in the Coop!
Chicks Day 10
We let the chicks play in the coop all day today. They seemed to really have a great time. Ting is getting big about twice the size as Precious Lily White. Ting is ready to be in the outside coop full time, but Precious Lily White is not so we are going to wait on putting them out as to not break them up. They both get a little agitated when they are not with each other.
We also got two new ladies! They are Rhode Island Reds, we have named them both Tomato only pronounced differently like the song " You say Tomato I say Tomahto".
