Spreading across Long Valley in California, the Volcanic Tablelands are a vast and unique landscape formed 700,000 years ago. Small canyons and bluffs dot the mostly flat area, offering amazing night sky views. Carved into the gray, red and pink rocks are extraordinary petroglyphs, mysterious symbols created by Native Americans centuries ago. Archaeologists can only speculate on their meaning. What she means: In 1999, Adam Powell and Donna Williams came together to make Neopets.com, one of the first browser-based roleplay games. It was cutting edge at the time. It was one of the first websites to use flash, introduced the world to immersive advertising, and was one of the first mainstream attempts at multimedia storytelling, the success of which would not be replicated until the advent of homestuck in 2009. In 2005, the website was purchased by Viacom after promising to give them the budget they needed to keep the game up-to-date. However, instead of doing anything to update the game, viacom put all of it’s resources into finding new ways to monetize off of the website, eventually firing the original devs. If viacom had actually kept their end of the bargain neopets very well could have been one of the most innovative websites of all time, but instead it now exists as the physical embodiment of everything wrong with capitalism.
