many regions in Ontario and the Northwest Territories have been evacuated or given serious health warnings due to air quality or fire proximity. it is causing extreme temperature issues and a horrible air quality problem, in addition to the literal destruction caused by the fires

the air has looked filtered orange like an old western movie for the last several afternoons, and despite the fact that we are also in a heat warning (partially due to the nearby fires) we've had to keep the windows closed. i was outside just briefly yesterday and i could see ash falling on my phone screen. everything looks and smells smoky, and it's been a very painful few days as someone in the "vulnerable" group

my district has been advised to prepare emergency kits and stay indoors as much as possible (AQHI is considered hazardous quality here today)... i don't ever recall being given advice to prepare emergency kits in my district, not even during other bad seasons that have hit in recent years. the city here is actually usually well-known for taking in evacuees from other places during wildfire season, due to our proximity to many smaller townships and the Indigenous Reservations in Northern Ontario. i have friends whose family camps have burned down or come close, and a nearby summer camp that is well-known for providing for underprivileged children has had to have an emergency evacuation due to nearby fires and extreme heat

these disasters are disproportionately devastating to the disabled, children and elders, and those of low socioeconomic status, which in turn makes them also disproportionately affect POC and my Indigenous siblings and cousins

it's been one year since Roo crossed the rainbow bridge

and still sometimes I wander into the front room out of habit, and I have a disappointed gutted feeling in my soul to see my sister's fish tank instead of Roo's cage (no offense to the fish). I'll be sitting in my room and have a thought of, "man, I wanna go pet the Roozy" and have to take a moment to remember I can't...

it's hard to lose a pet. it's hard in a larger and different sort of way to lose a pet that was ☆your☆ baby for ten years. I don't think I'll ever have a part of me that doesn't miss him. I'm going to end up an old 90+ year old dying lady in a hospice that tells any nurse that will listen all about the pet bunny she had 70 years ago

you're getting all the carrots and kale you want, now, Roo. when I get up there you're gonna get so many snuggles too (and allergies won't stop me this time)

this is a custom plush I ordered from Etsy from a shop called Kukucia Crafts. I sent the shop owner a ton of photos of Roo to get this done but I did not expect him to turn out so well 🥺🥰

y'all I'm so happy with this Roozy 😭 I opened the package and cried. the shop owner made him and shipped him from LITHUANIA to CANADA between late August and now -- amidst a postal strike here no less -- and I love him so much, he's so soft!! I keep looking at him and wanting to cry 😭🥰🥺
