Ok but like..... what if pearl was being unnaturally snappy and dismissive about marinas concerns during the splatfest dialogue because she thinks shes holding marina back from pursuing something bigger than off the hook like a solo career. Shes obviously aware that marina is way more popular than her, and i think it kind of bothers her more than she lets on. it leads to feelings of self doubt and insecurity, and she starts to view herself as just marinas shadow, marinas the one with the better looks, better singing voice, and musical composition skills after all. While she obviously loves marina and loves being in a band with her I think part of her is hoping that off the hook "breaks up" due to forces outside of her control just so she can stop feeling guilty about bringing marinas career down.

Or maybe the north american writers just suck at characterization again idk its a toss-up
