I’ve been told that for legal reasons I’m NOT allowed to name the cute guy that dragged me for drunken burgers at this non Burger King related establishment. 🙈🙈🙈
@roryosully: Are you just… eating lettuce?
Bonnie seemed to balk under Rory's line of questioning, frowning across the table at him. She was hesitant to answer him, her choice of words half-hearted and thrown out in frustration rather than with any real truth to them. She also hadn’t entirely expected him to fixate on her phrasing. It wasn’t that she thought Rory was actually emotionally stunted, but he didn’t seem to get her. Sometimes, she wondered if he was only friends with her because Missy had taken such a surprising liking to her. Sure, Rory lived where she worked, so he kinda had no choice but to see her on a fairly regular basis, but she doubted that mattered all too much to him. If he wanted to ignore her, he would, and when she was being a bother he would tell her as much.
Sufficed to say, she didn’t think he was emotionally stunted, but she did think he didn’t overly care about romance or love or any of the things that Bonnie was so insecure about. More often than not she found her clashing with her friend – because he really did mean a lot to her, even if it wasn’t mutual – over their different approaches to life and love and relationships. Bonnie liked casual sex just as much as the next person, but she didn’t think it was all that unreasonable to want for more.
“No. I just think... You’re kinda oblivious sometimes,” she shrugged, explanation no doubt as confounding as her original statement. She doubted it would help Rory get a grasp on the situation much better, but it was all she had.
Bonnie crinkled her nose in his direction as she inhaled cigarette smoke, her lungs burning. Hadn’t the guy who just ditched her told her that asthma was an ick? Either Rory didn’t prescribe to the same beliefs, or he was proving himself as oblivious as she’d just declared him. Either way, the ache in her lungs was manageable for now and she still felt pretty garbage after Roger’s rude assessment of her, so she couldn’t be choosey about the company she was keeping.
“It’s not that I’m not happy,” she grumbled, suddenly feeling insecure. She didn’t like being under the microscope, her faults and insecurities being put to question.
She’d never thought of herself as unhappy in herself, despite her obvious failings. Ariadne, Maggie and Missy told her she was hot all the time, her younger siblings loved her with all their hearts, and Jenson and Sylvie made her feel like she’d won the friendship lottery. She had no right to be so self-deprecating all the time, yet with each failed date the crack in her heart seemed to splinter ever more.
“I dunno. I guess I just wanna feel like there’s someone out there who thinks I’m, like, worth the time,” she admitted, a lump forming in her throat.
She couldn’t cry in front of Rory – it would be too humiliating, and she was pretty sure he’d be booking it out of there faster than Roger if she did – but she suddenly felt that kind of bone-deep sadness that was so hard to snap out of. She cleared her throat, quickly dabbing at the corners of her eyes to stave off any unwanted tears.
“It’s whatever. Who cares, right? I mean, it’s not like it matters anyway. The New York dating scene is hot garbage and I’m never gonna be anyone’s type long-term or even for a little fun anyway!” As scathing as her words were to herself, she pitched her voice a little higher, forcing a wide smile onto her lips. Rory looked uncomfortable enough, she didn’t need to drag him through an impromptu therapy session.
“I’m not oblivious,” Rory muttered, perhaps too sharply. He realised, a second too late, that it was the kind of thing someone who was oblivious to their own faults would say. Still, his indignation was already out there now. And his own stubbornness would ensure that he stood by his statement. If Missy were here, he’d have no doubt that she’d back up Bonnie. Although, that didn’t say much for either argument. Bonnie could say the sky was bright red and Missy would likely agree with her.
He felt the uncomfortable sensation of not knowing what to do creep up on him. Bonnie was upset, that he could see. He realised that she put much more stock into this whole dating malarkey than he ever had. So what was he meant to do?
Kian had always been pretty cagey about why he didn’t date much, although Rory had the sneaking suspicion it had everything to do with that GAA arsehole he’d gotten rid of back in the homeland. Missy was vehemently against settling down, which was why their arrangement suited them both perfectly. As for Rory, he’d never seen himself as one for dating. He was too busy for that. He had deadlines to meet, publishers to e-mail. Commitment wasn’t a concept he viewed in any sort of positive light. Even allowing his publisher to sign him onto a five-book deal for Oracle had temporarily made his skin crawl.
Sometimes, Rory didn’t think he was made for longevity. His longest relationship so far was with his perpetually suffering editor. Up until now, he hadn’t realised that other people might see that as a fault.
“Look,” Rory sighed, scrubbing his free hand down his face. With the other, he stubbed his cigarette out in the ashtray, doing whatever he could to avoid eye contact with Bonnie now that he knew she was crying.
“You’re… worth the time,” he said. He didn’t necessarily mean to sound like the words were being choked out of him. He just didn’t do this. He wasn’t the pal you went to when you wanted comfort. Rory was the friend you sought out when you wanted to nip down to the pub for a quick drink, or discuss the new Doctor Who episode in-depth with. He wasn’t the kind to provide useful advice. Would Bonnie notice if he quickly turned the conversation around and started talking about his Mrs Flood theories instead?
“Just ‘cause - what was his name? Roger? - was an arse, it doesn’t mean you won’t find someone, alrigh’? You’re probably barking up the wrong tree searching for something on those fucking apps anyway, like. You’re not bad-lookin’, Bonnie.” He quickly rolled his eyes, knowing how she’d react to that. “You look nice. You always look nice.”
He sent her a shrug from across the table.
“Don’t you want to meet someone and get to know them instead of forcing something that isn’t there ‘cause an app told you it might work out?”
There was a familiar sensation of discomfort weighing down on him again and he gave his shoulders a shake, as if to shrug it off.
“Christ, look what you’ve got me talking like. I sound like a fucking eejit.”

What's your favourite thing about Bonnie?
Sure, she probably sent me this herself. But Bonnie's good craic, like. Doesn't take herself too seriously and puts up with my shite all the time. I like that she keeps putting herself out there. She's not afraid to give things a second or third chance. That, and she's a good distraction for Missy, so she keeps her off my back and all.
