Welcome!
Hi guys, welcome to my blog. I will be posting about lots of trails and walks around Roscommon and Leitrim. Follow along to see all these counties have to offer!
When out on long walks in the countryside, it's important to remember that often we're walking through fields and farm land, home to many animals just like this donkey I met along the blue way!
We must ensure we're being respectful and not disturbing them, and if walking with kids or dogs, make sure our dogs are on a lead and that you know where your kids are at all times!
📍A great way of getting to know Carrick-on-Shannon, Co.Leitrim, is on the heritage walk. Head into the local tourism office to pick up your map and away you go!
📍This self-guided tour brings you along Quay Street and St George's Terrace before heading up the ominously named Gallow's Hill.
📍From here the trail leads up towards Summerhill where Carrick-on-Shannon's old workhouse can be found (now a boys school).
📍A little bit further up the hill and you'll find the hospital. Walk around the back the hospital and you'll see the old building where the deaths of 1,869 people were recorded. Most of them were buried in an unmarked site just in front of the hospital where there is now a Famine graveyard memorial.
📍See if you can spot the "to the workhouse" signs mapped out along the route.
📍So much history around this small town! What's your local town known for?
⛏The second trail we're looking at is the miners way in Arigna, Co. Roscommon
⛏This trail is a little harder than the last one we looked at so if you're thinking of doing it, keep that in mind!
⛏The trail brings you up to The Mining Experience, which is a fun interactive experience teaching everyone about the mines along with a cafe suitable for the entire family, and Santa visits around Christmas time!
⛏Comment below and let us know if you'd take on this trail💪
🌸Our first trail we're going to look at is the ShannonBlueway!
🌸This gorgeous trail follows the canal from the River Shannon in Carrick-On-Shannon to Achers Lake in Drumshanbo, as seen below.
🌸It's suitable for all ages and abilities, so why not bring the whole family for a walk and get a treat in the local café in Drumshanbo?
🌸Take a look at the map and comment any questions you might have about the trail, and what you want to see next!😍
In our next few posts we're going to look at a few trails around Roscommon and Leitrim and all they have to offer. Take a look at these few pictures of the gorgeous trails and let us know which one you'd like to see us talk about first😍
