actually i think the best thing that could happen for Jane Byers is to have the Matilda effect with her powers.
they slowly burn out with disuse. she stops looking for danger around every corner, learns little by little to erode that constant wall of fear and adrenaline that spikes that muscle memory connection.
i like to think she goes to hawkins community college. grows her hair long. keeps in touch with her pack who've all gone to uni but finds her own little group, other slightly odd weirdos with niche interests that don't find her strange in the slightest.
Jane takes art classes and beginner's math and literature- anything she feels like. goes at her own pace. finds joy and security in the knowledge of all the things that had been kept from her for so long.
Jane starts volunteering at the local animal shelter. she's a natural with the cats who are too shy to come out of their kennels. wonders with wide eyes and open hands for the strange and exotic pets that come through the doors. the front desk ladies and the rest of the staff adore her.
there's this scruffy scottish terrier at the end of the row of dog cages with a big DO NOT APPROACH sign taped to the chain links. Jane asks about him- the dog who cowers in the corner, who growls and snaps at anyone who dares to come close.
he's a lost cause, honey. best leave him alone and save your energy for the socialized ones.
Jane has had enough of rules. of being told what to do and how to do it.
she approaches the dog's cage with the same quiet, gentle energy she's always had within. takes every lunch break she's got by the bars, sneaking the scruffy thing pieces of ham. eventually building up enough trust to feed the dog right from her hands- first through the metal, then fully sat on the other side. giggling softly as the pup licks all the oil from her fingertips.
one of the desk ladies fudges some paperwork. the terrier comes at no cost to the Byers household other than Jane's steadfast attention and time. he turns out to be a wonderful dog- playful, loving, trotting at Jane's heels everywhere she goes without the need for a leash.
she names him Jack. like the terrier he is.
Jack and Jane spend many happy hours in the woods behind her home, chasing sticks and looking for rocks by the creek and laying sun-drunk in the tall grasses, side by side.
one afternoon Jane is petting Jack behind the silk of his ears and she tells him- out loud, as she often does- "I don't think you were ever mean. I think you were just very scared, for a long time. I think maybe you were always meant to be happy like this."
Jack licks a long, wet stripe up her hand and bounds off for a stick.
for the first time in months, Jane closes her eyes and reaches into her mind. that vast expanse, the unknowable darknesses, the lurking recesses of energy and power stored up.
usually, there is a fire there, waiting to be harnessed. waiting to be enacted, exacted, by her hand and someone else's. always someone else's.
for the first time in months, there is nothing that surges to greet her. nothing tingling through her body, overtaking her skin like wildfire.
there is only the cool, gentle rush of the creek. a wondering thought about what Joyce will make for dinner. a quiet steadiness.
greatest dynamic in the world IS strange, eccentric asshole and their normal and polite friend who on closer inspection is actually worse in deeply weird and unexpected ways
