The Doctor Who fandom often acts as if Rose was just another companion that the Doctor chose to leave. Like Sarah Jane. But this misses a lot of important nuance and ignores the selfless nature of how the Doctor loved Rose.
When the Doctor first tries to send Rose to Pete’s world it’s to be with her family. Not to avoid seeing her age and die. It’s what the Doctor sees as her deepest need after watching how close she was to Jackie. After watching her grief over her dad. When they first went to Pete’s World, he was terrified to lose her to a reality where she could have her dad. But later when she saw that she had a chance to live with both her mom and dad in the family she always wanted, thats what he chose for her. Even though the pain was written all over his face. Even though it hurt him terribly. This wasnt him saving himself. It was him trying to give Rose the life he himself often secretly wished for and the life Rose openly ached for too. Even though she did choose the Doctor over it.
When Rose chose the Doctor and was torn from him anyway, the Doctor did not tear apart time trying to get her back. Because she was alive and so was her family. He couldn’t risk changing that, because SHE came first. Not any kind of selfish need to have her around at all costs.
Finally, yes, he pushed for Tentoo to be the one to have Rose. He let Tentoo say “I love you” so Rose would choose him instead even just for a moment. Not because he was sparing himself the pain of seeing her age. But because that’s what he believed was best for her. Not for himself.
The Doctor loved Rose so much he put her needs above his own. When she asked if he’d leave her behind like the others “Is that what you’re going to do to me?” he said “No. not to you”. And he meant it. He would’ve endured watching her age if her whole family didn’t end up making a life in another universe.
When he left others it was selfish. When he left Rose it was selfless love. Even if the choices were not his to make, they were for HER. Not himself. And Rose was the first time he did that. In the past, the Doctor left people behind to spare himself pain. With Rose, he deliberately brought pain onto himself to give her what he thought she needed.
we need to talk more about the scene in "the christmas invasion" where the doctor tells rose that something is coming because
it's the first moment between just the two of them since this whole mess started. sure, mickey and jackie are there too, but for a second you almost forget that fact. he reaches past jackie to grab rose. there is equal parts fear and fascination in the way rose watches this new doctor, and the desperation from him to get the information out bleeds with a desperation for rose to trust him. there's plenty of fear there too. fear for how this regeneration is going wrong, fear for what the pilot fish herald. fear for rose, her safety. that she'll leave him over this. but it's underscored by an intense trust and the belief that if anyone will understand him - be there for him - it's rose.
underrated scene of all time also the doctor is sweaty, feverish, and pathetic and rose is serving looks and i'm too into both of them to watch this scene without kicking my feet and twirling my hair
I like to imagine tentoo likes to fall asleep touching temples with Rose, maybe bc of some dimmer telepathic connection that lulls him to sleep or a long kept habit of comfort from his time lord self, a remnant of a more intimate kind of connection

Today marks 20 years since the ninth Doctor and Rose first met!
21 years!
The fourteenth doctor's storyline is so funny because it's basically like. Both your body and your car/wife being like. Damn bitch the only one that can fix you now is the the equivalent of the high school best friend you haven't spoken to your entire adult life. And then she does in fact fix you.
- THE FOOL-
because I feel like he would jump off a cliff holding a balloon, believing he could fly.(I have no other meaning. I just want to express a naive and innocent state of mind)
Just wanna walk up to the TARDIS and lean against her and say “oh TARDIS we’re really in it now”
