“You might not want to go that way, dear. There is a large hole on the way, you could twist your ankle; or worse.”
“A large hole? Thank you for alerting me to such a thing. As great as a twisted ankle would be to get me out of engagements, I’d much rather avoid the pain that comes with it and the being trapped inside of my home.”

Patricia climbed up one rung of the ladder and pulled the book off the shelf. “Then you should try it, I do believe it will make up for the injustice of forcing you to make conversation with the men of the court. I know from experience that isn’t an easy task.”
“Tis not.” Rose head shook as she spoke. "Thank you for this,” She said as her hand extended out to take the book. “Maybe I will have time to finish it before the Duke releases I am not where he left me. Or else I will have to return to the library. I hope I have the pleasure of seeing you again. You are already much better company than others of the court.”
cleveryoungpatricia:
“A novel or two? Either you are a fast reader or Duke Waters is very longwinded.” She joked and smiled, standing and going over to a shelf. “Have you read this? ‘Euphues: The Anatomy of Wyt’ by Lyly? He’s a English writer, I thought it was rather clever.”
“A little of both. If I get to the library fast enough I can get through almost two novels. If the Duke, as of late, decides that I must speak with the men of the court then I am forced to smile and make pleasantries until there is a break in the conversation where I can sneak away. I have never read any of his works before.”
hearthofhanna:
“Animals are actually quite shy, Rose. Forest animals are the shyest of us humans. That’s why they run away from you. She is– kind of…”
“I understand that animals can be shy, Hanna. I only meant that a shy cat in your possession seems unnatural. You are far from shy and if any individual could coax an animal it would be you.”
cleveryoungpatricia:
Patricia shook the girl’s hand. Ah, another woman titled by title and position and too clever for her place in life. Perhaps that was why men fought so hard to keep women down, because they knew the fairer sex was smarter.
“Rose, then. I am Patricia. ” She said gently and sat down in a chair. “Are you looking for anything specific? I have been over this whole library nearly five times, I’m sure I can point you in the right direction.”
“It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Patricia.” Rose withdrew her hand after she spoke. “Five times? I thought I may be the only one who has ever done such a thing. Thank you for the offer but I am not looking for anything specific. I sought the library out to make time pass by quicker as I wait for Duke Waters to finish what business he has. I usually get through a novel or two if I am lucky.”
hearthofhanna:
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve had this beauty for awhile. He– I mean She, has just been really shy up until lately.”
“A shy animal? Are you certain this one belongs to you?”
thelongdead:
“Sadly, I am without any time to spare. I am waiting on someone to finish some business as well.”
“I see. Both of us must play the waiting game, a harder game than the one we are playing now.”

mareenaofthesevenseas:
“And you have waited this long to tell your mother?” Amphitrite said with a soft pout on her lips. “I am so happy for you, my little ocean.” She said with another wide smile as she embraced her daughter in a tight hug. “Poseidon will be thrilled. Be ready, though, he will try to spoil our grandchild, whether it be a boy or a girl.”
“I did not wait too long. Just long enough to be sure that I was with child.” A warm smile formed on her lips as she spoke, “I will try to be ready for what father does. This child will be loved and spoiled by the love that its parents and grandparents give to it.”
thelongdead:
“That is very honorable of you.” He took the seat opposite the young woman. “Let us play, and I will not go easy on you.”
“I will do the same for you.” Her hands reached for the pieces on the side of the board as she began to resemble it. “How is it that one of the men who have the ear of the king has free time?”
thelongdead:
“Your polite way of warning me that I am in for a challenge?”
“There are too many words laced with double meanings these days. When it comes to this game I try to be truthful. ”
cleveryoungpatricia:
Patricia looked up, surprised by the girl and her small speech. Though she enjoyed it and agreed, as much as one can agree with an abstract concept. “Yes, I suppose you are right. I should be glad to just have this.” She smiled, turning around to face the girl fully from where she was kneeling on the floor.
She patted her dress down a little and looked up at the girl, “Perhaps all great libraries of kings should join together and then we might achieve what we once had.” Patricia stood then, holding her hand out to the girl.
“You are Duke Waters’ ward, are you now?”
Her head tilted to the side as she ran her fingers across the spines of the king’s books. A smile spread across her lips as familiar titles came into sight. Many of these novels had helped keep her sane while the Duke sought to entertain those of the court or royal family. It was always easier in here then it was out there. Rose’s head turned towards the other woman when she asked if she was the Duke’s ward. The smile she had on her lips faltered as she once more looked back towards the books.
Even in here she could not escape such a title. With a sigh, she took a step away from the shelves and turned towards the other woman her hand extending to meet the woman's hand.
"It is Duchess Rousseau if you would like to be formal. The Duke’s Ward if you are my godfather or any of his friends. Rose. Rose is what I prefer, my given name and not one associated to others."
thelongdead:
“It would be my pleasure, my lady.“
"Please take a seat. My last opponent has excused himself from a losing game.”
thelongdead:
“What are you doing?”
“Playing a game of checkers, Lord Romelo, while the Duke finishes his business. Would you care to join in on the next game?”
colette-filo:
“NO! This is only my third or fourth drink….I…I feel great. You feel great. We’re all feeling great here.” Colette said taking another fairly large sip. She could feel the memories coming back again. They always hit her like a tidal wave. She couldn’t deal with seeing her friends and family how they used to be. So, she was going to drink to forget all the memories. At least it could help for a bit
Her voice was hushed as Rose leaned towards the woman. “Perhaps you should slow down. Take it easy with this one.” She looked at the woman and then at the man who spoke, his face becoming more crossed by the minute. “Sir,” she directed her attention towards the man one more. “If you could give me a moment I am sure all will be well. There is no need to linger here when there are so many others who seek your attention or whose hands twitch and reach towards their belts every so often. Surely those require supervision and not a lady who becomes flushed by the ale that she drinks.”
