Myths About the Zodiac Signs

Aries: The myth most associated with Aries is the Greek story of Phrixus and Helle, children of King Athamas. Their stepmother, Ino, hated them and tried to have them killed by hatching a devious plan. Right before their murder, a magical Ram flew in to save them, sent by their natural mother Nephele. The Ram took off with the children on his back, bringing them to safety. Afterward, Zeus placed a Ram’s image in the heavens to immortalize his courage. The Ram then shed his golden fleece, which continued to be a source of inspiration and legend. From the sky, Aries the Ram now symbolizes leadership and bravery, along with the protective powers of his fabled golden fleece.

Taurus: The Greek myth of Taurus comes from the story of Cerus, a large and powerful Bull, owned by no one. The spring goddess Persephone found him one day, trampling a field of flowers without realizing it. Although the Bull could not speak, he understood Persephone, and she calmed him by her very presence. Persephone taught the Bull patience and how to manage his strength. Every year thereafter, she and Cerus would reunite in early spring. Riding on top of him, they would set the flowers in bloom. When Persephone descends into Hades in the fall, Taurus returns to the night sky as a constellation. There, he reminds us of quiet steadiness, loyalty, and earthly splendor.

Gemini: According to Greek myth, the Gemini Twins represent the brothers Castor and Pollux. Young and adventurous, they shared their life together with curiosity and zeal. Castor was mortal, Pollux immortal, and eventually Castor died, leaving Pollux distraught. Pollux wen to his father, Zeus, and begged him to help. Zeus allowed Pollux to share his immortality with Castor, transforming them into the constellation Gemini so they could live together forever. From the sky, the Twins remind us of human complexity, as they embody mortality and divinity, separation and unity.

Cancer: According to Greek myth, Cancer was a giant Crab named Crios, who guarded the sea nymphs of Poseidon’s kingdom. He was enormous and immortal and took his role of protector very seriously. One day, a few sea nymphs escaped, and Crios sent a giant squid named Vamari to retrieve them. The squid devoured them instead, and when he returned, Crios fought him to the death. Afterward, the Crab was crippled and in terrible pain. To repay him for his heroism, Poseidon relived Crios of his pain by placing him in the sky as the constellation as Cancer. From the sky, Cancer reminds us of the dear Crab’s protectiveness, care, and vulnerable strength.

Leo: According to Greek mythology, Leo was a mythical monster known as the Nemean Lion. Heracles was required to kill this Lion as one of his twelve labors – thought to be an impossible feat. Since the Lion was impervious to weapons, cunning Heracles eventually succeeded by strangling the Lion with his bare hands. Realizing the protective powers of the Lion’s hide, Heracles skinned the Lion, making a cloak and helmet out of his fur and head. Then the spirit of the Lion was placed in the sky as the constellation Leo, reminding us of the Lion’s mythic power and magical strength.

Virgo: Astraea is perhaps the most interesting Greek goddess associated with Virgo. She was the last of the celestial beings to leave Earth at the start of the Bronze Age, after witnessing the degeneration of mankind. Goddess of innocence and purity, Astraea was a virgin and caretaker of humanity. When she left Earth, she was placed in the heavens as the Virgo constellation. Many believe that the adjacent Libra constellation represents Astraea’s scales of justice. Shining from the sky, Virgo reminds us of virtue, as she waits to return to Earth in angelic form, as the ambassador of a new golden age.

Libra: The main Libra myth revolves around the Greek goddess Astraea, represented by the constellation Virgo. Astraea was the goddess of innocence and purity who lived on Earth as a celestial being. She eventually fled, escaping the onslaught of human depravity, which appeared at the dawn of the Bronzed Age. Astraea represented justice, just like her mother Themis, the goddess of divine justice. When Zeus placed Astraea in the sky, she was holding the scales of justice, represented by the constellation Libra. The Libra Scales remind us of harmony, delicacy, and fairness. They help Astraea to hold her place in the sky, until the day she returns to Earth as the ruler of a new golden age.

Scorpio: The Greek myth most associated with Scorpio involves the god Orion and the goddess Artemis. One day Orion bragged that he was the greatest hunter who existed and would kill every creature on earth to prove it. Artemis, goddess of hunting, did not retaliate or defend her status as the greatest hunter, because she was enamored by Orion. This irritated Apollo, Artemis’s twin, and he began to work with Gaia, the great earth goddess, to create a Scorpion that would kill Orion. Eventually, the pair battled, and the Scorpion won. Zeus then placed this creature in the sky in recognition of her good deed. The Scorpion was placed on the opposite end of the sky as Orion, to prevent them from fighting. It is said that Orion appears in the winter to hunt, fleeing in the summer when Scorpio appears. As a constellation, the fierceness and bravery of the Scorpion are immortalized, reminding us of her power – along with the fate of Orion’s hubris and brutality.

Sagittarius: The Greek myth of Sagittarius is connected to the archer Chiron, who was a gentle and compassionate centaur. While many centaurs lacked intelligence and acted out in violence, Chiron was known for his wisdom and ability to teach. One day, while trying to wipe out other centaurs who were causing problems, Heracles shot Chiron by accident. Finding Chiron suffering and helpless from his venomous arrows, Heracles experienced deep regret and sadness. Chiron was immortal and could not die – although he wanted to, since he was in so much pain. Prometheus stepped in after observing Chiron’s struggles, and help elevate him to the heavens, where he would live as the constellation Sagittarius. There, he reminds us of his wisdom, teaching, and gentle might.

Capricorn: The Greek myth connected with Capricorn is the story of the sea-goat Pricus. He was the father of a whole race of sea-goats who had the heads and bodies of goats and the tails of fish. They lived in the sea, close to shore, and were known as honorable and intelligent creatures. Created by Chronos, god of time, Pricus shared Chronos’s ability to manipulate time. As the story goes, Pricus children began exploring and swimming to shore. On land, they slowly lost their tails, intelligence, and ability to speak and live in the sea. Pricus was distraught. His children were disappearing from the water, rapidly becoming regular goats. To fix this, he revered time and warned the sea-goats of their fate in attempts to save them. No matter how many times he did this, Pricus’s children continued to leave the sea to explore. Finally, he gave up, allowing them to live out their karma. Immortal and in pain, he begged Chronos to help him die. Instead, Chronos placed him in the sky, where he could watch his children from above, even as they played on the highest peaks. There, Capricorn reminds us of paternal love, the inevitability of karma, and the importance of letting go.

Aquarius: The Greek myth associated with Aquarius is the story of Ganymede, a young prince who was said to be the most beautiful man of Troy. One day, tending to his father’s sheep, Ganymede was spotted by Zeus, who found him to be overwhelmingly desirable. Zeus decided he wanted to take Ganymede as his servant and young lover -a common practice in Greece. Once on Mount Olympus, Ganymede became Zeus’s cupbearer, brining Zeus drinks upon command. Essentially, Ganymede was Zeus’s slave, and Zeus cemented this role by paying Ganymede’s father with land and a herd of fine horses. One day Ganymede rebelled, pouring out all of Zeus’s wine, ambrosia, and water of the gods onto Earth, which caused a massive flood. After reflection, Zeus realized he had been unkind to Ganymede and decided to make him immortal rather than punish him. Zeus then placed him in the stars as the constellation Aquarius. There, the Water Bearer reminds us of rebellion and independence -and the chaos sometimes necessary when fighting for freedom and equality.

Pisces: According to Greek myth, Pisces is connected to Aphrodite (goddess of beauty) and her son Eros (god of love). One day, the monster Typhoon began to appear on Mount Olympus, sent by Gaia to attack the gods. None of the gods had the power to destroy Typhoon, so they transformed themselves into animals to flee from him. On a certain day, when Typhoon appeared, Pan warned the others and then transformed himself into a sea-goat, diving into the Euphrates River. Aphrodite and Eros were bathing on the banks of the river and missed Pan’s warning. When Typhoon suddenly appeared in the water, they turned themselves into Fish and swam away. Afterward, two Fish were placed in the sky as the Pisces constellation, commemorating the day when love and beauty were saved. Venus is the roman name for Aphrodite, and astrologers consider Pisces to be Venus exalted – or exalted love – and to represent the spiritual dimensions of the Venusian realms of love and art.

Introduction to Sigils

What is a Sigil

A sigil is a symbol that is drawn for a specific magical purpose; to represent the intent of the drawer or to represent a specific entity.

In Medieval systems of ceremonial magick systems, a sigil was the symbol of a specific entity, an angel or a demon which allowed a magician to summon and control the entity. In modern magical systems, a sigil is often used in magical work to represent a specific intention or to give shape to a thought form. In Chaos magic, a word or a statement may be reduced to symbolic form to create a sigil for ritual use using Spare’s technique. Sigils may also be created using someone’s name and used as a target for sympathetic magical practice.

A sigil may be drawn, carved or wood burned using any medium you like, but a pen and paper is usual. When the sigil is no longer needed, it can then easily be destroyed by tearing it up and/or burning it. While rituals surrounding drawing and activating sigils vary, the most important thing is to keep your mind on the goal while drawing the sigil. It can then be carried, hidden nearby or hung up where people can see it as is appropriate.

The word sigil derives from the Latin sigillum meaning “seal” and is likely also related to the Hebrew segula meaning “word, action, talisman”. The plural of sigil may be sigilla or sigils.

Spare’s Technique

Spare’s Technique is a method for creating sigils that was developed by Austin Osman Spare right around the turn of the 20th century. It involves creating a sigil using the letters in a written statement of intent.

First, the statement of intent is written on a piece of paper.

Traditionally, the statement begins with “This is my will…” or “This is my wish…” Though I’ve seen modern practitioners use “MY Will = …” etc. Or dispense with this part altogether.

Most modern practitioners who have dispensed with the “MY WILL” statement, avoid any statement indicating “wishing” or “hoping”, lest one continue wishing and hoping.

The statement must be a positive statement, that is, the words “no”, “not”, “never”, etc. should not appear in the statement. Instead of saying “This is my will that I will never get in a plane crash” you would write “This is my will; I travel safely by plane.” Instead of “This is my will; That the floodwaters do not reach my house.” you would write “This is my Will, that my house is safe from the floodwaters”.

It is also important that the statement be very specific to avoid any situations that could involve your Will coming to pass in a way that is unacceptable to you. The statement “I have a new home.” Could be brought about by a serious accident that put you in a nursing home, or the death of a family member resulting in your inheritance or a transfer in your job that causes you to move out of necessity. Best to state “I have purchased a three-bedroom home in Birmingham.” or “It is my Will to purchase a three-bedroom home in Birmingham.” – but try not to use any extra words, be concise.

Next, Reduce the Statement to an Image

Remove all the vowels and write down the consonants, but only write down each consonant one time. You can convert numbers written as words into numerals if you like. At this time, you may also wish to convert the English letters into another language, an ancient or magical alphabet or whatever suits you. Or leave them in English as Spare did. Combine the remaining letters into a single image. Use the lines from one letter to make the lines for another letter, put letters within letters until you get the simplest image you can manage.

Voila, you have a sigil.

Spare was not the first person to use this method. It is reminiscent of sigils used by Agrippa and sigils found throughout the world in various languages, including bindrunes. The technique has been further refined since Spare’s time as well. Grant Morrison is credited with the most modern variant of this technique.

Using the Sigil You can use this sigil in a variety of ways. While the act of creating the sigil itself is a magical act that naturally causes you to focus your energy on the desired result, some prefer to use the sigil as a part of a larger spell. You may wish to use it for a petition or add it to a container spell or dress it and focus on it while raising energy- direct the energy into the sigil. You may choose to light a candle and chant over it or put it within your field of vision while raising energy in a more physical way. You can then hide it somewhere around your house or carry it on your person to bring the desired effect. Some schools of thought suggest you hide the sigil and forget all about it while others prefer to display it prominently.

Monday, Nov 30th

🌕 Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

The full moon penumbral lunar eclipse will occur at 8’38° Gemini, exact at 4:30AM. This marks the midpoint of the lunar cycle that began 11/14 with the New Moon in Scorpio.

This is a north nodal eclipse, so it is revealing our path and pushing us in directions where we are forced to grow. We will begin to realize what parts of our life are stagnant, karmic and keeping us stuck in the past. The Sun and the South Node in Sagittarius opposing this eclipse reminds us that hubris, self righteousness and superiority complexes will keep you stuck in duality.

The Gemini twins shows us there’s always another perspective or path to find the truth. Don’t get trapped in black-and-white, dogmatic thinking. Try to think outside the box and keep your mind open.

Being aware of power-and-control dynamics and things going on behind the scenes will be very important during this time as well. This is especially true with the media and the current political climate of the US. Interestingly, this eclipse is conjunct the USA’s natal Uranus, making for some interesting and chaotic energies playing out in the country.

Monday, Nov 30th

‼️ Jupiter parallel Uranus

Jupiter in Capricorn will parallel Uranus Rx in Taurus. They aspect but declination rather than degree, but the energies are still activated and present. This is a great time for embracing change, but with Uranus, these changes might be unexpected and even chaotic. This aspect occurs just after the Gemini lunar eclipse, early in the morning around 5:30AM. Pay attention to your dreams and what goes down in the early morning hours.

Tuesday, Dec 1st

♐️ Mercury moves into Sagittarius

Near 3PM, Mercury will shift from Scorpio to Sagittarius, shifting our mind and intellect from water to fire, yin to yang, depths to heights. Sagittarius Mercury loves to travel, learn, teach, explore and expand. The shadow side of Mercury in Sagittarius includes only being able to speak/teach but not being able to listen, self righteousness and always thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

Wednesday, Dec 2nd

🕰 Saturn conjunct Pallas in Capricorn

Around 3PM, Saturn, the planet of karma and time, will align with Pallas Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and War at 28’34° Capricorn. Pallas has made some pretty intense aspects this year, all of them influencing HUGE changes politically, but also personally.

She was conjunct Jupiter and Pluto earlier in November, and now adding Saturn aspects into the mix, these energies are really transforming our collective, country, political structures, etc,. There is a stripping away of old patriarchal systems happening right now.

The same theme can be applied to our personal lives too. We are all being pushed to let go of the things that no longer serve us. Use this time to see what needs to be released so that you are not being held back from aligning with your life path and destiny.

Thursday, Dec 3rd

💥 No major planetary aspects today, but the Moon in Cancer will square Mars and oppose Pluto. Mercury in Sagittarius will also semisquare Mars. Watch out for aggression and anger channeled through conversations with others. Avoid impulsive behavior.

At 7:40PM, Mercury in Sagittarius will trine retrograde Chiron in Aries. Communications exchanged today could be very healing, as long as you are willing to take accountability. Balance your ego so that you can see and speak the truth and allow healing to take place.

11/30 Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

The Full Moon and penumbral lunar eclipse will be exact at 4:30AM (precise midpoint at 4:43) at 8’38° Gemini. This marks the midpoint of the current lunar cycle which began on 11/14 with the New Moon in Scorpio.

This is a north node eclipse, and it is actually the FIRST north node eclipse in Gemini. The last north node eclipse with the node in Gemini was the summer solstice eclipse at the 1st degree of Cancer. Whatever House is ruled by Gemini in your chart is extra highlighted right now.

With this eclipse widely conjunct the north node, there will be revelations about our path of growth and evolution. Unfortunately, coming to these realizations may not be entirely pleasant, especially if the Universe is trying to show us what is karmic and keeping us in the past, preventing us from growth. This eclipse is showing us what we need to let go of.

This eclipse also makes intense aspects to the separating Jupiter-Pluto conjunction, which urges us to be aware of power/control dynamics operating behind the scenes, the way we perceive things, and how our thoughts are being influenced by others, especially the media. The moon will be sextile Chiron, so healing is possible, as long as you are willing to put in the work, see other people’s perspectives, open your mind, take accountability for your actions and face your shadows.

The south node will be conjunct asteroid Icarus, the mythical man who flew too close to the Sun. This exacerbates our karmic tendencies to self righteous thinking and the desire to escape responsibility/accountability. Watch out for impulsive actions and consider the consequences of what you say and do.

Neptune will be at a standstill, having just gone direct on the 28th. Now, Neptune will begin to inch closer into a T-square with the nodal axis in January 2021. With Neptune in Pisces and the south node in Sagittarius, our beliefs (spiritual, political, philosophical and more) can be founded on escapism and avoidance of reality.

Think about areas of your life where you may (consciously or subconsciously) refuse to see the truth. Where are you so myopically focused on your own perspective or desire to see things ONLY your way that you may be missing part of the bigger picture? Taking off the rose-colored glasses of Neptune will be the theme of the next couple months.

Interestingly, this eclipse also conjuncts Uranus in the United States’ chart. This can make for some unexpected and chaotic energy playing out in the country. In addition, Jupiter parallels Uranus just over an hour after the eclipse, which further accentuates the unpredictable Uranus energy at play.

This eclipse is preparing us for the winter solstice conjunction of Jupiter-Saturn in Aquarius. It is the yearly rebirth of the sun, and the start of a new Jupiter-Saturn cycle. It is also the consummation point of the Age of Aquarius. It’s incredibly rare and incredibly potent. A huge shift is coming.

The Sabian symbol for Gemini 8-9° is titled “a quiver filled with arrows” which represents mastery over the self. The keynote is man’s aggressive relationship to life as a basis for survival or conquest. This is what we need to change about our society: domination, power and control, war, aggression, etc,.

This keeps us divided, not unified and safe. If we view the mind as something to conquer, control or dominate, then we will continue to be stuck in the same old paradigms... but if we surrender the mind into the heart, something new will come forth and change us and our world forever, for the better.

All of these transits are testing the foundations of the relationships we have in our lives. This is the third and final Jupiter-Pluto conjunction of 2020. Jupiter is like a trigger planet, and when it conjoins with another planet, it takes that influence up a few notches. From today until the 17th, Jupiter with Pluto will be amplifying the Pluto-Eris square, for the third and final time in 2020.

**Many astrologers do not talk about Eris, as she is a new body discovered in 2005. But historically, new bodies are associated with what was unfolding in the world and the collective upon their discovery, so her role as a disruptor is clearly seen in what is happening on the planet right now. At the best, Jupiter brings light to the darkness of Pluto, and he can bring opportunities for massive transformation, evolution and rebirth. But Jupiter can also magnify the shadow side of Pluto; a ruthless desire for power and control, behind the scenes domination, subversive manipulation and jealous, vengeful energy. Pluto is deep and extreme, while Jupiter is adding more fuel to the already hot and heavy Saturn-Pluto-Eris fire. Tuesday, October 27th

Around 9:30PM on Tuesday night, Mercury in retrograde will backtrack into Libra, shifting the mind from the wateriness of Scorpio into airy Libra, switching the focus off our emotions and onto our intellect. Mercury Rx in Libra focuses on relationships, commitments and partnerships of all kinds. You may find yourself having conversations about the past and relationships from your past during this time. Exes or people from your past may also re-enter your life under this influence.

Mercury at 29’59° will semi-sextile Venus at 29’59° in Virgo, which means both planets will be moving into Libra at the same time, except Mercury will be moving backwards into Libra from Scorpio (because of the retrograde), and Venus will be moving forward into Libra from Virgo like normal. This simultaneous motion could create an alignment of the mind and the heart. You will be supported when sharing how you think and feel.

Venus is heading into some very intense aspects in the coming weeks as she moves further into Libra. She will be opposing Chiron, making a quincunx with Uranus and Neptune, and she will square the Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto conjunction, making difficult aspects to all of the outer planets. At the same time Mercury Rx moves backward from Scorpio into Libra, Venus will also be moving into Libra from Virgo. Venus is in the sign which she rules. Venus in Libra values relationships, partnerships, marriage, commitment and collaboration with other people. It is a very harmonious sign for Venus, but she will be heading into some very intense aspects in the coming weeks which may cause us to focus more on the areas of our lives where things are not so peaceful, or where our relationships are not quite so harmonious. Libra doesn’t like to stir the pot or rock the boat, but the boat will be shook regardless, so this might be an uncomfortable influence. We need to focus on grounding ourselves and finding our center in the coming weeks as we deal with these difficult Venus aspects. We must stay committed to the truth and focus on the reality of the matter instead of getting wrapped up into the superficial surface projections of peace. Work on cultivating balance in your life and within yourself.

There aren’t any major aspects today, but I wanted to mention how the Moon in Aries will be opposite Mercury and squaring the Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto conjunction, (technically square Jupiter on Thursday) because this Moon square is triggering the Mercury square with Saturn we will have on November 1st. So pay attention to what’s being brought up in your conversations and in the media! New information will surface during this time.

Uranus will also be perigee around 1:30PM, with the Sun/Uranus opposition occurring tomorrow on Halloween, just over an hour after the Full Moon in Taurus conjuncts Uranus. Uranus energy will be very dominant this weekend, so expect the unexpected and prepare for things to get a little chaotic and shocking. Try to embrace the changes that occur and open up to the Revolution of Uranus to make the most of these transits.

The Full Moon at 8’38° Taurus will be exact around 10:30AM, marking the midpoint of the current lunar cycle which began with the New Moon in Libra square Pluto on October 16th. This has been a very deep lunar cycle. A lot of darkness and shadows have been brought to light. This Full Moon will be conjunct Uranus, making the revolutionary rebel planet very strong. Uranus rules unexpected, shocking and sudden events, so anticipate that things might not go to plan. Changes may occur in your love life and finances as well, whether these changes are positive or negative is difficult to say because when you’re dealing with Uranus, you never know what you’re going to get. It’s like flipping a coin.

Essentially, this means we have a very long and intense Mercury-Saturn square from today, November 1st until after November 6th.

Mercury-Saturn can be great for having serious and grounded communications with others, but it can also tend to bring on depression, pessimism and negative thinking patterns. You may be focusing on everything that is wrong and ignoring all the things that are right, or the other extreme where you’re only focusing on the positive and ignoring the shadows which need to be dealt with. Mercury in Libra doesn’t like to rock the boat, and will sweep things under the rug for the sake of peace and harmony. Venus in Libra can be overly focused on others, what they’re doing and how they value us. The healing happens when Venus can learn to stop looking outside and instead look within. With Libra/Aries polarity, we want to find balance between our Yin and Yang, our masculine and feminine. If we are sweeping our anger, sadness and other negative emotions under the carpet, this is the kind of aspect that will bring those emotions back up. On the other hand, if you have been overly aggressive and self-focused, the healing here will come from focusing on others before the self.
