Racist people: “Why are Black people so controlled by a word?”
Black people: “Why are racists so controlled by a color?”
If it were “just a word,” it wouldn’t carry generations of violence, dehumanization, and intimidation behind it. Words carry history and meaning. People aren’t reacting to random letters—they’re reacting to what that word has represented and how it has been used against Black people.
That’s why when someone says “it’s just a word,” many people reject that framing. Historically, it was never just a word—it was often a verbal marker of oppression.
