Tell me why, today, in fucking Los Angeles the place known for it's progressiveness, the home of blue haired libs, I spot a bunch of bible thumpers with signs shouting to repent. Not too uncommon, right? They never get much traction and we defo have less here than other places, but y'see em once in a while. Well, I was with my grandmother and I mentioned as an aside "ugh, no hate like Christian love, right?" as we were approaching to walk past, and she just didn't really get it? She genuinely thought they were just trying to spread the word and get people to church, and maybe they didn't have enough room on the signs for more than "repent or hell". So I said "okay then, bet. So if I go say 'okay, how do I repent? How can I be saved?' You think they'll just tell me which church to try?" And she was uncertain about me asking but stood fast that that's all they'd do.
(a little context here: I am cis passing, I do not like being cis passing these days, so I specifically dye my hair trans flag colors to negate that. This only matters bc if I had just had natural hair, I guarantee they *would* have just told me which church to go repent at as my grandmother thought, but I digress)
I could not help myself. As we were passing, I stopped, I smiled politely and said "hey! so like, what can I do? What would Jesus tell someone like me to do?"
A blonde girl about my age looks away from me and meekly mutters "I rebuke you in Jesus name" like some comically ridiculous fucking depiction of tradwife subservience, like she was even afraid of speaking loudly *in her own gods name*. Her guy friend on the other hand, he smugly lifted his little megaphone and announced "a tranny like you is always a man. You'll never be a woman, hurry up and die faster to get to hell" with a smile on his face.
Now, this is ALL to be expected. But frankly, it just proves a point. Well, two points. Firstly, these people don't want you to repent, they just want to hate us loudly and use their "freedom of our superior religious expression" to get away with it.
But more importantly to me, secondly, even in Los Angeles, people will watch shit like this unfold in real time and do nothing. Frankly, there were 20 cops standing within eyeshot and they just glanced over and then carried on. Those cops know quite rationally that the chance of that hate speech turning into a crime was higher than zero. Hell, technically encouraging me to commit suicide "hurry up and die to get to hell faster"??? That's a crime in California. And were they preparing to intervene? Nope. Were all the "blue haired libs" and allies eager to jump to my rescue and defend a trans woman by shutting down the transphobic religious extremist shouting slurs? And like, I realize I haven't mentioned this, but this is in a crowded street market, vendors with open air stalls and dozens of people are just standing there watching this happen just feet away. Like it's not an open street corner, it's a closed street where they're actively holding people up in front of people's little art and craft jewellery stalls n' the like. The people here are the kind you'd expect to *say* something. Even an "are you okay?" But, nothing.
Nobody will ever lift a finger to help the trans community until after the extremists are already murdering us. Hell, they *are* murdering us, and nothing is being done. As a trans woman, allies do not exist. I'm sorry, but like, you people who call yourselves allies are not real. The LGBTQ+ community has ourselves and only ourselves. When we stand on a street full of cis-hets, we really do stand alone. In that moment, surrounded by dozens of people, faced with shouted hate speech, I alone was the only voice speaking in defense of me and my community. That defense a shouted "You're what jesus called the pharsese, you short stack little cunt, and we both know which of us he'd see flayed in the pit".
I know I should have been the bigger person and walked away, but frankly, just this once, it felt real good to be mean right back.
gods i love being shouted down by fellow queers for calling out a zionist. i love my local larp park being willing to accept this cunt and call me “out of line” for calling him on it. i love him lecturing me on the danger i as a trans woman face as though i dont fucking know.
