BD Wong Instagram Update about Sam Neill's passing 7/16/26
" The Sam Neill Memorial Festival continues with strong evidence of the Special Sam Sauce. Folks, I know these just seem like random nice pics of Sam and the #JWD cast. But hold up…1. You can’t deny how people simply love(d) being around him. He put good energy out in the world and it came back to him. It’s coming back to him right now, this week, in this incredible outpouring of love for him and everything he means to both colleagues and fans. It’s both amazing and totally understandable. I think Sam himself would be incredulous and humble and warm about it, and very, very moved. 2. He was a goofball in all the best ways. He’s the guy mumbling about “being a fashion model” under his breath, or goes wacko for a split second or makes some side remark right before whoever’s taking the picture snaps the shutter, to make you react unexpectedly and make the photo spontaneous. When he looks like he’s “scowling” it’s either in service to that “we are serious fashion icons” thing, OR acknowledging the impossible performative aspects of photo-taking, OR the awkward social component, OR (possibly most likely) a VERY youthful prankster goin’ “I don’t know what you guys are talking about, *some* of us here are very serious people.” Really, I know at first glance these are a bunch of nice on-set photos of a bunch of actors and the director of a movie. But they’re also a somewhat fascinating side-study in what it’s like to be present, playful and connected to your friends and colleagues. What a guy! When people say someone “lit up a room,” sometimes they mean that a perfectly classy person brought out the joy in *other* people that sometimes just needs a little clever coaxing. "
