there is something fascinating in how don views identity. he clearly thinks the beatniks are less “real” than his manufactured self—or, at least, equally real, i.e. that they’re all poseurs. their identifiable counterculture costume is limiting (because it draws scrutiny and immediately “others” them) whereas he can dabble in smoking weed and still tip his hat to the cops and get away with it ("you can't go out there." / "you can't."). all of the benefits, none of the drawbacks. if you’re going to fake something, why not the most useful thing? but he’s continually drawn to these countercultural figures as well—people who are willing to stand out—especially women. midge, anna, stephanie. in another key, rachel, faye. platonically, he seems to find his equal in synthesis of these traits in peggy—she too is drawn to counterculture as a font of creativity but not bought into it as a way of life.

the thing about “fandom” is that i uhhh philosophically disagree with several of the tenets that are generally accepted as “universal” in the background so then i’m just standing there like 🧍 surely there must be a space for argumentative pretentious women who like intellectual rigor and criticism. no? they want to kill me with sticks?
