ive been looking into labor & delivery as a field, but im sort of held back due to my mother (💔) and i want to make sure its something im 100% convinced of to jump in to because i genuinely like it and want to do it.
soo… opinions are welcome, if not thats okay!!

oh my gosh, absolutely no worries! i am always happy to talk about this because i was on the exact same boat literally four months ago so let's go! more advice down below lol
so i was very fortunate enough to go to a nursing school that really encourages and lets us shadow a specific unit so i think i literally showed up about 7 or 8 times this semester on top of going to my regular internship shifts. i'm someone who needs to experience something a bunch of times to feel sure and my biggest piece of advice is to just reach out to your connections, a nursing advisor, a preceptor, or an instructor. i guarantee you, someone will know someone who knows someone who can hook you up. just jump in and experience it for yourself, and when you do, always say yes to EVERYTHING.
my senior internship was also on a postpartum floor and i was definitely between that kind of nursing and labor and delivery. i absolutely loved postpartum nursing because of the education and bonding aspect of it, but honestly, shadowing for labor and delivery just really solidified things for me. the hospital i'm at deals with a lot of high-risk pregnancies so i was able to see a few vaginal deliveries, a c-section, and also quite unfortunately, some d&cs/fetal demises.
the latter was something i grappled with for quite some time time, because i'm gonna be honest, i am someone who really takes things to heart. my initial perception of l&d is that it was going to be sunshine and rainbows (god mara what were you thinking) labor and delivery can be an absolute rollercoaster, in that some shifts you're blessed with being part of one of the happiest moments of someone's life and then some shifts where you see the lowest. if you can somehow find a way to keep coming back after seeing the worst of it, then do it! if not, no harm, no foul, you got closer to finding out your passion!
and then if shadowing isn't an option, which i completely understand, what i also did was use all my resources to the best of my ability. i looked up nurse residencies in my area, compared orientations/how do they support new nurses, did simulations online, dug deep into various procedures, etc. ask, ask, ask! be curious! be absolutely relentless!

whew. it's been a long couple of months and i just wanted to give a couple life updates because of all the sweet and kind messages asking if i'm still alive lol 😋 thank you guys so much for sticking around! i recently graduated from nursing school AND got a j*b and met someone AND getting ready to move but it's finally summer! it's just been so hard to write since free time has been few and far between. i think this is actually the first day in months that i've been able to take some much needed r&r and catch up on something not nursing related.
but again, for those of you who have ever sent me a message, an ask, a sweet note, or all of the above, again, thank you so much for checking in! it genuinely means more than words could ever ever express. i missed you all! take care of yourself!

Would you ever consider still posting that work outside of the collab, or maybe are there rules against that doing that?? (I’m curious about how that sort of thing works but also it sounded like a very interesting plot and am super interested in reading it if you still happened to post it)

completely understand this question, no worries! i felt so awful missing my bwa collab work and it literally sat half finished in my drafts for so long, but i picked it up again over break and now it's uhhhh.... 51% finished! i would absolutely love to post it outside the collab someday though, as i was literally so #horned up thinking up the concept and i was so proud with the stuff i had written up and i'm sure that'd be chill!!! thanks for the question <3
HELLOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! i'm so good!! the philippines is currently treating me well (or badly i can't really tell) i've had jollibee every other day this week and i've been thrifting like CRAZY for my upcoming bday. so in other words, i am having the time of my life!!!! just desperately trying to ignore the fact that school starts again in five days and then i'm back in the trenches again
I #SURVIVED MY PEDS AND PSYCH ROTATION! my professors were so evil this semester, but nevertheless we persisted 😛 did i have to literally hibernate for three weeks after the semester ended yes but ALLEGEDLY the hard part of nursing school is done... allegedly. next semester, i should just be focusing on my internship and #living it up as a senior.
also my evil man left the country 💔 but we're so up because this means i am freed from the shackles of this hyperfixation and i can get back to where i belong (here)
