Reverse osmosis and its advantages

Reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the best ways to remove particular contaminants from the water. Reverse osmosis treatment helps reduce health risks that trigger from contaminants such as lead or nitrates. Industrial wastewater treatment is also done via reverse osmosis. The interior parts of any RO plant contain a semi-permeable membrane which is usually made of either cellulose acetate or a thin-film composite material. This membrane is then placed between two screens and wrapped around a tube which looks very similar to the roll of paper towels. Water pressure forces it through the membrane. At times, a pump can also be added to increase water pressure even more to enhance membrane efficiency. The membrane is able to separate most of the dissolved substances in the water, only allowing purified water to pass through. The purified water then gets accumulated in a storage container while the contaminated water goes down the drain as waste. If the main water quality problem is inorganic contaminants, then reverse osmosis is an excellent treatment method. Mostly, RO units can get rid of 90% or more of inorganic chemicals.

There are several different stages to remove both organic and inorganic substances in a RO unit. This includes a prefilter, a reverse osmosis membrane, a storage container for the treated water, and an activated carbon postfilter. Let's see how each of these parts work to make the water pure.

·         The prefilter takes care of removing the silt and other particles. Chlorine can be removed as well to protect the life of the membrane.

·         Then the membrane in the reverse osmosis system removes harmful inorganic substances such as fluoride, sulfate, nitrate etc.

·         Later, the water goes straight to the storage tank where it is held for some time. The process is a bit slow as a typical unit may yield only 3-5 gallons of treated water each day.

·         And finally, the activated carbon postfilter gets rid of gases and other organic chemicals as the membrane fails to do so.

Now, that we know how a RO unit works, let's look at the many advantages it has to offer.

The ability to remove dissolved substances with significant efficiency while restoring the taste of water is one biggest advantages of reverse osmosis. One of the most important factors is that RO does not add any other chemical to treat the water. It just simply separates the dissolved substances from the water. A water softener can help keep the membrane of the RO unit perform at its best. Although the RO unit purifies the water, they don't have the ability to treat water that contains harmful microorganisms. Pores inside the membrane may allow the microorganisms to pass through along with the treated water. A well-maintained reverse osmosis system can provide good quality water in household chores. Also, commercial RO systems are widely used across restaurants, hospitals, schools, malls and hotels for supplying clean drink water.
