Lake Baikal during winter (Russia, January 2017).

The surface of lake Baikal freezes over during winter and spring, from early January to May or June (earlier in the northern part of the lake, later in the southern part).  During this time, water temperature is lowest just below the surface of the lake, and gradually gets warmer with increasing depth, until about 250m below the surface, where it can be over 3.5°C.

Eventually the surface ice breaks up, and the lake’s surface is warmed by the sun.  Mixing of the waters means that by May or June, the upper 300m of the lake is the same temperature.

Lake Baikal is at its hottest temperature in July to August, sometimes reaching temperatures of 24°C in the southern shallow bays, and 16°C in the main part of the lake.  Water temperature at various depths is reversed from winter: it is warmer near the surface, and colder the deeper you go.

When autumn begins around September, the surface temperature falls again, and water mixing evens out the temperature of the upper 300m again in October to November (about 4°C).  Lake Baikal is known for its late freeze that takes place in the middle of winter (January), long after the onset of the severe Siberian frosts.

((hello, this is late as well, i’m sorry. big thanks to Elise @damian-schreave​ for the rp!! i tried adding in some thoughts, but idk it didn’t feel like they were adding anything so i’ve taken them out again... instead i put in some memories that might help understand Rosie a bit better, since they show some experiences in her past, idk if it makes sense, but the memory parts are very recognizable because they’re in italics and have no highlighted colour
