She took a trembling but firm breath. With complete, cold premeditation, she decided for the first time to issue a final challenge to her own demons, crossing a boundary she had avoided for a year. She didn't stop halfway. Slowly, with her heart fluttering in her chest, she slipped her trembling fingers between his fingers. Giovanni's skin was warm and rough, still bearing the marks of the night route. Giovanni froze instantly. The shallow, steady breath in his chest stopped for one, long fraction of a second. He knew her cold retorts, escapes, and eternal distance. He perfectly read all her microscopic reactions and understood with brutal clarity how powerful a barrier of fear she had just torn down for him in this one, tiny second.

Giovanni was sitting on a low wooden stool in front of the entrance to a small, dark osteria. When Penelope emerged from around the corner, his gaze immediately landed on her figure. On his swarthy, sun-tired face, that familiar, roguish smile slowly bloomed. “Guarda chi c'è...” he muttered lowly, letting a gray stream of smoke out through his nose. “Our lady doctor in the very heart of the dirty alleys of Palermo.” (...) “I saw you at the Vucciria, Penelope,” he said more gently. “Your eyes weren't looking at chamomile at all.” He leaned minimally toward her, and Penelope held her breath, fighting the instinct to flee. “With me, your secrets are safe,” he added, looking her straight in the eyes. “I didn't see anything today. I only heard you buying chamomile.”

Giovanni didn't even flinch. He slowly set the rag down, lifted his head, and looked at her. On his tired face bloomed that familiar crooked smile. “Soprattutto grasso, Dottoressa. Mostly grease.”

When Giovanni leaned in deeper to precisely show her a small shut-off valve, their hands met completely accidentally. Her cool, pale, clean surgeon's hand rested directly on his massive hand—smeared with grease, bloodied, freshly wrapped in the white bandage she had applied herself just a moment ago.
They both froze abruptly. In the thick gloom of the garage, in absolute silence, this one short, fleeting moment of unintended closeness was suddenly charged with a more powerful tension than any dance on an official palace floor.

The following hours poured out in the southern sun of the estate dragged on mercilessly. Penelope spent them in the cool, shaded study, pretending to herself that she was reading a thick tome of a medical encyclopedia.

This fragile, artificial peace shattered suddenly and brutally just after three o'clock in the afternoon.
The afternoon silence was torn by the terrifying, high-pitched roar of an engine. A moment later, the deafening crunch of gravel and the screech of tires rang out.

“Pen! Apri la porta! Open up!” Isabella's anxious voice reached her from behind the door. Before Pen could even react, the door burst open with a crash, and Miss Torrisi stormed inside with momentum.
