Repeat it with me, kids: Mary Shelley shared a lot of her mom's first wave feminist ideals but she sure wasn't a perfect intersectional feminist. You probably would have found her pretty problematic if you knew her personally. She and Byron were friends - if anything, after that summer was over, she was the only person in that group he could still stand/he actually liked. She didn't write Frankenstein because she wanted to be left alone from all the Idiot Men(tm). She wasn't dismissed by the men either - she won the horror story contest. Byron loved Frankenstein so much he did what he could to get it published. She mourned him when he died. Just read her diaries. Her legacy has been pretty solid in part because she outlived both Percy Shelley and Lord Byron and was able to secure it, but she had a big hand in securing the legacy of the romantic movement too. She wasn't the one Smart Girl sniffing at the Fuckboi group - she was the Cool Girl of the Fuckboi group. Yes she wrote one of the best novels of all time. All of this is true and all of these facts can coexist.
