@rosscomputing
late post...
Sorry but pretty much final update. I left the island. There were a lot of changes taking afoot and hopefully for the better. Good luck to you all.
Ross Wifi
Spring 2012, Ross WiFi appears to be accessible by any device without the manual input of static ip. yay
Add "rumed" as the wireless network name, password is "stdwireless".
Reading ECG's
http://ecgteacher.com/index.php
Great source on learning to read ECG's. This semester has been difficult so I haven't had much free time in updating. Haven't figured out how to get connected to school's WiFi either yet.
School WiFi
Not sure what they changed to their network but you're not alone if you cannot connect using you're non-laptop device. Going to try to see a way around whatever they did after this mini. If anybody has a clue, feel free to drop it in the questions and I'll have it posted.
Purchase electricity online!
Medical school tools
If you are using Google Chrome try out this app, BioDigital Human. Similar to Google Body Labs but with more information and tools.

Ross Net Drive 1.1
This is an annoying window to have. Once connected go ahead and just close it. You will still be connected to the G: drive and be still be able to print. You can also close the little window that shows your printing balance but it still stays in your taskbar notification area.
No biggie
Connecting to Campus WiFi w/Android
Settings for Android WiFi settings to connecting on campus. Replace XX with a number between 10-255. This is from Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet so I'm just assuming it is the same across all Androids.
I love your blog. I'm starting sem 1 in like, 4 days and it makes me happy to know people like you are out there and willing to help. This information will really make a difference. I have 1 question though, can you PLEASE make a post or send me some info outlining the precautious steps I should take to ensure that my laptop does not fry due to a power surge? Whats the order of plugging appliances in? I was thinking (US) surge protector/strip --> 500W transformer ---> wall. Will that help?
Hi, sorry for getting back to you so late. If you're connected to a surge protector your laptop should be safe from power surges. If you look at your laptop's power adapter it will say "input" with a range between 100-240V. This means if you have an outlet adapter you don't even need a transformer. You can just plug a power surge protector into the outlet and then connect your laptop to the power surge. I can't say about any other appliances/gadgets but if you just check the power ratings, if it has a range of voltage that it can accommodate up to 240V it is safe to use without a transformer.
Also, most laptops won't go over 100W but if you want to check it will say on your power protector. If it doesn't then it's just Amps x Volts = Watts.
As for plugging into schools outlets... a friend of mine had his power supply fail after we lost power but I think it was just a freak accident. If you're really worried about it, you can carry around a small surge protector.
Hope that helps and good luck in your first semester!
Learning Resources
There are a ton of material given in lecture in addition to another ton of extra resources that students come across. Knowing what is more important to study and what is most effective is a lot of work in itself. Here are some useful sources that have become invaluable to me.
Google Body
One of the best anatomy tools there is. Easy to see relationships of various structures. Just keep in mind that there are variability between bodies.
University of Michigan Gross Anatomy (UMICH)
Any 1st and 2nd semester student knows this is the go to website for all their gross anatomy lab needs. Doing the questions are highly recommended because you will come across these again in the future (hint hint).
Human Embryology
Great embryology site.
Good luck to everybody on their finals and congratulations to the current 4th semesters.
Ross Email <3's Outlook
It's been a while since my last post. This semester is coming to a rapid end and this will be my last post until next semester. Just a couple of things IT related before moving on.
* The printer situation was dire at the beginning of this semester. 1/5 printers were operational in the library at most time, the printers all around campus were constantly malfunctioning/out of paper, etc. It's been a dramatic 180 degree change since then. Most printers are working now around campus and you can go into the library without having any expectation of a wait. Thanks to whoever has fixed this situation
* WiFi on smart phones/tablets are still disallowed to my disappointment. From what I understand it's argued from IT that we don't have the bandwidth for anything beyond student laptops. This point is moot because 99% of people who already have a smartphone/tablet already access the Ross network. (one of the earlier posts if you want to connect to Ross WiFi). Hopefully this is something that can be rectified next semester.
Ok so you want constant access to Ross email without having to fire up your browser every time. I'm sure the settings are similar to Thunderbird or whatever email client you use but I'll be outlining steps for Outlook.
Step 1:
Set up a new profile as a POP3 account. Enter the following information as outlined in the picture above in the black boxes. Continue into the more settings (redbox).
Step 2:
Next in the "Outgoing server" tab, make sure to check off the first box.
Step 3:
In the "Advanced setting" tab just copy the picture outlined above.
And that's it. Pretty simple.
Last note, I know the picture from the previous post are not working. I'll see if I have it backed up and I'll repost it. If not.... we'll see.
Mediasite in 2x with Chrome
If you can't tell I use Chrome as my web browser. Unfortunately Mediasite doesn't seem to play friendly with 2x speed. With Firefox you can download the plugin (HERE) but I couldn't get it to work the same for Chrome. You can also find he Firefox plugin on G drive under /Mediasite_Resources/Double Speed Using Firefox on PC/.
I'm sure there's a simpler solution but this is my workaround.
Download IE Tab extension HERE.
Step 1:
Click on wrench bar on the top right -> tools -> extensions
You can view all your extensions this way. Not going to go through this again later on so I figured I would be complete the first time in showing.
Step 2:
Click on the "Options" in the IE Tab extension.
Step 3:
In the "Auto URLs" field enter the following:
http://mediasite.rossmed.edu.dm/rusmmediasite/Viewer/*
Click on "Add" and now whenever you enter Mediasite it will automatically change to an IE Tab. First time around you have to enter your id/password again but just click on remember me and you won't have to keep re-entering the login information again. You can now watch lecture in 2x in a Chrome tab.
Ross Net Drive (missing post)
So I updated on how to connect to the netdrive without using Ross's software but saw that there was too much potential to do harm so I removed the post. If Ross's IT put passwords up on things that we probably shouldn't be connecting to, it wouldn't be a problem. Rather than potentially cause problems I would rather avoid it altogether. Sorry.
Pandora, iTunes and more
Have you tried listening to Pandora only to find that it's restricted because you're on Dominica? or have you found yourself trying to browse the iTunes store and find that it refuses to load? There is an easy solution to this location based/port blocking problem. That's the use of VPN. Virtual Private Network (VPN) basically funnels your internet traffic allowing you to disguise your connection. Connecting to a VPN will allow you to bypass the location restriction to Pandora, bypass the port restrictions on Ross's WiFi, etc. What are some of the downsides of this? Generally there is a fee associated with such services. There are free ones but unfortunately they do not provide the same bandwidth as the paid ones.
There is a free VPN service that I use which is HERE. It has a time sensitive cycling of the password (I think it changes daily) but the service is sufficient to do things like Pandora, etc while on rumed. In addition they give you options to connect via L2TP and OpenVPN. There is a tutorial linked towards the bottom on how to configure your computer to connect to their service. Personally I use OpenVPN but the choice is yours.
The tutorial they provide is pretty detailed so I won't bother with it here.
Student Resource POPUP ANNOYANCE
I refer back to this page at least 10 times in a single day. It is frustrating when Ross decides to put some sort of update that blocks the links that I most frequently use. For Chrome users (and Firefox I guess) this can be removed with AdBlock. If you don't use already, you can create your own filter to remove these kinds of web annoyances.
To download Adblock Plus extension for Chrome click HERE.
Step 1:
Right click on the small red ABP button in the url box and enter options for Adblock.
Step 2:
Click on "Add your own filters" tab and then click on "Edit filters as raw text" and copy and paste the following:
studentresources.rossmed.edu.dm###Div_s studentresources.rossmed.edu.dm###Div_c studentresources.rossmed.edu.dm###Div_b
Hit apply and viola. No more of these annoying popups. Remember you're not going to be seeing these popups anymore so you might miss something important. Probably not though.. just saying.
Smartphone WiFi Connection
Probably the most sought after once you get on the island.
Ross network SSID is: rumed
Normally it is hidden so you have to just manually type it in. The password is: stdwireless. I'm sure they meant to just abbreviate "student" but you know...
For iOS: next step is to manually configure your network. In Wi-Fi Networks, click on the blue arrow next to "rumed" network that will lead you into network settings. Hit "Static" tab and enter the following:
You MUST change the IP Address. You can change the last 3 digits somewhere between 10-254. If you find that it is connecting but you're still not getting any internet, try changing the IP Address to a different number because it might be in use. This is pretty much the same settings you can use for Android or Blackberry.
You can check to see what your computer is using as an ip address by going to start menu, type in cmd, hit enter. You will see a command prompt and type in "ipconfig" and hit enter. Scroll up if you have to and look for where it says "Wireless Lan adapter" and you will see underneath the correct DNS suffix for Ross, your ip address in addition to your other settings.
Another way you can check is by going to your wireless connections and click the status of the Ross wifi you're connected to. It will be listed under "Details".
