“You mean this merry band of criminals, mercs, and Spirits name all else? Cerberus packed our roster with firebombs.”

“In any case, it doesn’t matter who I like – it’s a good thing. I can count the ones I trust on my hands, but I don’t think there’s a single man on board that can’t get a job done.”

    She breathed a heavy sigh of near defeat; having tried so hard to come across as civil it was definitely a challenge to remain so towards this gentleman who was so settled on disliking her.       “I gave you no reason to go about hating me either. I mean, we won’t make that good of a team if you’re just going to be a prolapsed anus the entire time.”

   “No, I can't hate you -- I don’t.” If he dared to be so generous, he might concede about being overly severe as well. Better that than gullible, he thinks, pushing himself to his feet.

   “That doesn’t mean I trust you; they're not jointed.”

   His intent in coming to join her at the table -- to take a closer look -- is masked in an easy stride; he set his weapon down in a haphazard row with several others. As if he could spare much attention for the one in his own hands.

   “Likewise, I can work with you while I’m wary; we’ll do our business, and I’ll check our backs for knives,” he said plainly. “If your prints are on them, I shoot you. If they’re not, I don't. Simple.”

“Make no mistake, I don’t do any public speaking. Though I have been told that I can pull off a decent impression of the Councilor.”

“Then again, he's not exactly what I’d call a step up in that area.”

   “I expect you to realize you can’t run off and do this solo.”

   But that was a glaring curiosity he’d noted from the very beginning. Two Spectres aboard one ship and command is hardly equal– in fact it’s the newcomer doing most of the leading. Why was he here to give the seasoned Spectre back-up on a scouting mission? “–I don’t think you’re allowed to, are you? Wherever you go, I’m supposed to follow.”

   “Thirty minutes is a long time in the middle of nowhere. What are you hoping to find out there?”

    “Our bearings.”

   Hot metal groans under pressure; the door sinks under his hand in a flock of sparks rolling off beaten alloy. He does not thrust it ajar; rather, he opens it tentatively,  measuring the light against the walls. The sun is out; easier on one’s feet, maybe, but not exactly on his peace of mind. They can’t blame a storm for this one.

   “What's allowed isn’t my problem,” he says. "Common sense overrides the chain of command, provided you’re inclined to do any actual thinking of your own; something I assume you already understand -- ”

    Now the door opens, and in comes that bracing stream of cold. As he props a foot up onto the rim, he does want to spare, at least, one more glance for Garrus.

   “ -- Officer Vakarian.”

   With that, he vanishes through the doorway, out to a sheer drop down the side and into heaps of snow below.

   “You know, anyone else would’ve gone to the Council. Had their team hand-picked from a roster of willing Spectre agents; tested, trained, trite.”

    “But Shepard appears to be in the possession of an actual brain.”

“You’re not supposed to be keeping tabs on your crewmates, right? Brewing the discontent? Kasumi Goto, at your service. And if I find out you put any bugs on any of my weapons to track me when all is said and done, I guarantee, to make your life hell.” 

     However, she couldn’t truly amuse his intimidation factor much more than she already has. She could try and be civil, communicating with him as much as he would offer.        “Nihlus, please, you got to trust me. I’m the one making sure you don’t get shot out on the field. Doesn’t that warrant some sort of trust? I mean, I haven’t shot you thus far into our lil’ adventure.”

    “I haven’t ‘got’ to do anything,”  he said. “I’ve only just learned your name. No one with a real agenda goes around gunning down every man he’s even slightly afraid of. Unless he’s mad.”

     He gestured his shotgun at her. “You don’t strike me as mad. Patient, maybe. That’s what worries me.”

Finally, they’re starting to talk some practical sense– and it was all definitely what he was already planning to do, definitely. His omni-tool is brought up with a few sparks and a sluggish delay, from the look of his arm he may have bashed it in the crash– or on Nihlus one of the many times shortly after. Regardless, it’s still fit for running diagnostics.

“Alright, shouldn’t take to long to–”

No. That’s the first thought to come to mind; a frustrated sigh and just ‘no.’ It’s the kind of behaviour from them he’d been ready to expect since coming aboard– and here he was without a Commander to keep Nihlus playing along.

“The hell you are.” The tool is minimized with the diagnostic still running in the background, hopefully. “I’m not sitting around doing maintenance so you can run off unsupervised.”

“You expect me to sit with you?” 

He snorts, turning back to the door to guide the freshly-brewed point of his tool into line with the seam of the exit. 

“Between the two of us, I’m hardly the one that needs ‘supervising’. But I’m sure even you can look after yourself for thirty minutes.”

Remember that time Nihlus turned around at the last moment and shot Saren in the face? And how he and Shepard cruised around in the Normandy like a couple of specter space pirates?

“I think it’s a step in the right direction,” she said with a thoughtful shrug. God knew that whatever tension between turians and humans could be relieved was much needed. Give it another 30 years and maybe they could all be friends.

“I can understand the reservations people have about this collaboration, but it’s a good opportunity to show them what good can come from it.” It was a bit of hopeful thinking, but she liked to stay optimistic. At the very least they didn’t have the same kind of animosity between them like they did with the krogans.

“Either way, I’m just honored to be a part of all this.”

“You give them too much credit; turians are stubborn bastards. With long, detailed memories. And zealous historians.” But there’s that steady shine in her eyes; optimism. A particularly tough brand of it, considering her history. Interesting.

“Anderson did mention a great deal of enthusiasm on your part. Is that why you’re here?” He asked her -- it sounds innocuous enough to start. “Something to prove?”

     “Oh no, I am not into killin’. Too much of a mess. My work is more lurking in the shadows, taking what I’m paid to grab then go on my merry way.” Perhaps that was the best way to say ‘I’m a thief’. “Although, some of my hacking work can border into spying.. Just depends on who the highest bidder is.”        Kas sat at the nearby table, assuring to keep a safe distance between her and Nihlus as she began to dismantle her weapon to install the modifications and clean the deepest of crannies.         “Why do I have this LINGERING feeling you are not fond of me?”

“Why indeed?” His eyes have fallen upon the metal at her fingertips. Deft fingertips; nothing an inch out of place. Yes -- definitely a thief.

“Black hood, black suit, no face, no trail. Would you look away?” His talons tighten ever so slightly over his shotgun. The slightest, impatient twitch.

“All things considered, I’m being much more cordial than I should. You could return the favor -- starting with your name.”
