Maybe the “I love you” was because if Keith was going to die there during that fight, he at least wanted Shiro to hear him say those words. Even if talking to Shiro did nothing to deter him before, Keith just had to tell him those words before he never got the chance too. His life can’t end without him getting the chance to tell Shiro that. To express how important he was in his life before it’s ended.
