(JTA) â Itâs been a busy couple of weeks for breast cancer. Of course, breast cancer is always busy, exerting its sneaky destruction through abnormal cell growth. But now itâs October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the scary fact is everywhere again: One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.
This time around, the talk about breast cancer feels more urgent, more ubiquitous and definitely more confusing. Recent headlines have screamed âWhat If Everything Your Doctor Told You About Breast Cancer was Wrong,â in Mother Jones, and âWhy Doctors Are Rethinking Breast-Cancer Treatment,â in a Time magazine cover story.
When even the White House is awash in pink, itâs extremely tempting to put blinders on â especially for Jewish women like me. Ashkenazi Jews face a 1 in 40 chance of having a BRCA mutation, which increases their lifetime risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer up to 84 percent. (Overall, one in 400 women are BRCA-positive.) READ MORE
Now, that was a debate. Courtesy of a Democratic Party thatâs shifted left thanks to its base, for the first time in American history a national television audience was exposed to a serious discussion about capitalism vs.

Misogyny isn't âȘ#âpresidentialâŹ. Women demand/deserve respect. Including in politics & at polls. âȘ#âWomenVote⏠@ebrody

Perfect headline on @zakcheneyrice's @micnews piece about #Cosby #rape and #USA. Â
New York State now has strongest campus-rape legislation. #EnoughIsEnough. #YesMeansYes #NoMeansNoÂ
And from March, VP Biden on rape-kit backlogs, although I like Scandalâs treatment in season one, episode 3.Â
Rachel Fershleiser: Are you a feminist? Jon Krakauer: Of course. I mean, how can you not be a feminist if you have a brain in your head? If youâre not a feminist, then youâre a problem.

Love this tumblr. If you see something, say something -- when it comes to all-male boards, panels, etc. Well done. http://100percentmen.tumblr.com

According to Freshome, MIT students have designed a fun way to recharge their batteries with a tech-friendly lounge chair called the SOFT Rocker. Between classes, students can rest in the lounge chair while recharging their various devices.
I personally want to slide down the top of it.
Someday, I'd like to have a roof deck with two of these.

Thursday is nonprofit day. Again.
Nonprofits are foxy. Like Firefox, brought to you by Mozilla. Here's the Mozilla manifesto, in English. It's also available in a gazillion other languages if you need it.
The Mozilla project is a global community of people who believe that openness, innovation, and opportunity are key to the continued health of the Internet. We have worked together since 1998 to ensure that the Internet is developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a result of the community's efforts, we have distilled a set of principles that we believe are critical for the Internet to continue to benefit the public good. These principles are contained in the Mozilla Manifesto.
Not only is Mozilla headed up by a woman, but it's headed up by a woman who flies around on a trapeze a couple times a week. That makes me feel really good.
My one-minute tribute to Rain's Sound Judgment a la Dr. Seuss.
A plea by me, you heard it well You stopped the rain -- that was swell Ella and I were pleased as punch We did not get wet, no, not a bunch not a tad, you see, no need to sweat about varying degrees of wet. I took that time to say a plea, ... but you know I packed a black brolly. On the way to the Union Street stop down Fourth Ave, the skies cleared up, When the Savings Bank came into view I'd forgotten all about my IOU You say, Erica, it's a new day But my thoughts drift back to yesterday I'm grateful still you see, the storm clouds parted just for me. And because we enjoyed our day I put my anti-metered rhyme here, these words born out of thanks, not fear
So, you'll definitely want to video record yourself reading this, remix it, and then share. Probably you'll need a Siamese cat in raincoat walking a wet black lab in the video.
Note: Yesterday, I made a deal with the rain that I'd pay tribute if it abided by my wishes.
Weather: Not raining. Me: put on coat, grab bag and keys. Weather: Sky opens up. Me: Make pleas to weather, rainfall, etc., via Facebook, head off to pick up Ella. (Unconfirmed) Weather: Hears plea, stops, restarts while I'm on subway, stops when I resurface in Manhattan. Me: Writes yet another poem praising rain: soundness of judgment, benefit to planet. Me: Creates new water-toasting "ritual." "Ritual": goes viral, joins rain dance in the weather-cultural-history section of Smithsonian.
